Leonard's lyrics - can't get them out of my head.

Post by mutti »

I realize how far my addiction has gone..does anyone else have the same?
The songs keep running through my head at all times, beautiful lyrics...
I am always playing his music when I drive...
The biggest thing is I notice no matter who I am talking to or with
that within in a few minutes someone has said a word or group of words
which are part of a Leonard Cohen song...and I finish the sentence with his lyrics...usually in my head sometimes outloud.
I am aware of this and think although it is beautiful
that I should stop listening for a week
and see if this continues..
eg...in a normal conversation someone may say..everybody knows...blah blah
or I'm waiting for a ....and my mind starts singing waiting for a miracle to come...
it happens at least once in every conversation I have with people.
Now I do look at this in a positive light dont get me wrong
but..
I am wondering if others are having this same thing?

Hi Leslie,

Oh yes, that has happened to me too! Usually, if it's during the day I'll just have an inner smile and feel warm all over, but many times the words/songs stay with me at night! For a month (about a year ago), every time I turned over at night or awoke even for a few seconds, there was "Hallelujah"........like a never-ending record! That's been followed over the months by "Everybody Knows" and "Anthem"! But it was "Closing Time" that woke me up for good and I couldn't get back to sleep :D ;-) 8)

Yeah, similiar things happen for me too! Often when my friends complain something I blurt for them something laconic from Leonard`s song like "That's how it goes everybody knows" without thinking. And if I see birds on a wire I guess that you know what song starts immediately run in my head. ;-)
A cross on every hill
A star, a minaret
So many graves to fill
O love, aren’t you tired yet?

lol that has happened to me too. After the concert, and then listening daily, i would wake up with words walking through my head. The thing that really got me, was the pace. You know how the words come out so ...paced and even - well thats how the words unfold to me and i would just let them slowly come out, amazed at how i remember the words.

But somewhere in the past month, this little morning ritual has stopped. Guess i was on overdose for a while there.

Big grin on my face when I read your charming post. EXACTLY the same thing with me.
As for playing his music when I drive - I had to ban his CD's from my car. I almost had two accidents because I was so enraptured and concentrating on the words - oh those wonderful words. What did he mean by that? After the second almost accident, I ripped the CD out of the player and threw it in the back so I wouldn't be tempted to to reinsert it.

Recently on a plane when landing, when we were asked to close all electronic devices, I was listening to LC on my Ipod. I did not remove the ear buds. They didn't notice and I didn't care. I figured if I don't hear emergency instructions and I'm going down, the last voice I will hear is Leonard Cohen singing in my ears.

Hi bridger15 ~
Recently on a plane when landing, when we were asked to close all electronic devices,
I'm not sure how far airline technology has come, but there was a time [not 'too' long ago] when I remember hearing/reading that those warnings regarding electronic devices doesn't have to do with emergency instructions [though that makes sense, as there could be an emergency landing... take-offs and landings being the most dangerous times of flights], but rather interference with their instrumentation, i.e. landing instruments. The industry may have compensated for all that by now, though... hope so ;-) .

I love these accounts and I, too, have experienced the immersion of Leonard's lyrics in my life, thoughts, and conversation. I only wish there were some who 'get' it when it happens. Except for talking with my former husband on the phone [or in person], there are sooooooo few.

It's funny imagining Leonard's cd being flung into the back seat  ... and I've been where you're at, Mutti [sorry, I just prefer that to calling you Leslie... having met you, you are somehow such a "Mutti" ~ a very endearing name for you]... and I love it when Leonard's lyrics own their place in my conversation.

Thanks Lizzytish
Mutti was our beloved cat that died in our arms after a lengthy illness this past November at a ripe old age.
I miss her so much and can't bear to get another just yet but its coming soon.
Its pronounced Mooti...
I am waiting patiently (sort of) for announcements for a fall tour...
If it happens I will come to as many as I can
and would love to meet all of you again.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about your cat's death, Mutti. She had a wonderful name [I was pronouncing it correctly right along, too]. I'm glad to hear that she lived a long life and that she had the comfort of your arms when she died. It's so important to me to be with them when they die. It's such a hard loss and I truly know how you feel when I say that. You're right on not being ready, yet. It's not something that you can rush. It's just not fair to any of you; you, Mutti, or your new cat. I'm hoping to attend at least one more concert, if Leonard tours at all in the fall. Won't be able to afford to fly anywhere, though.

Hey Lizzy....Buddy passes!! :D :D ;-) ;-) A lot less than a ticket, but you do have to travel standby! If I can help ya out, I will... :D

Mutti...yes, that does suit you! I'll keep visualizing at least a couple of fall concerts and we'll all get together again! No problems this time!

We'll all be "waiting for the miracle" :D

Reading this thread puts a smile on my lips.

I have yet to see Leonard live, if all goes well that should change very soon, but his lyrics are always with me. I even don't need to listen to it anymore (although I constantly do in my car), as they keep running in my head when I wake up, when I go to bed, in the middle of the day. And it's something else every time: from Diamonds in the Mine to Here It Is. I am afraid to think what might happen after the concert, as my mania is at its peak, it seems.

Dear Fan ~

I so much hope that you get to see Leonard Live in Israel, too. I really do. And that the protestors will stay home.

Oh, Geez, Diana  ! Now THAT would be a trip :o . That thought wasn't within a million miles, but visualizing my checkbook sure was taking up a lot of space in my head  . I forget that certain people actually have such an incredible benefit. I remember when I waitressed at the Hilton and got a free room for a couple nights for me and 3 other women in Chicago to see the King Tut exhibit. And, later, in Chicago for me and my boyfriend. Those kinds of benefits are not to be underestimated! That would be awesome, of course 8) :D 8) ! I guess we'll see then... ;-) ? Ha. And at first when I read your sentence, I couldn't fathom who "Buddy" was and he passed "What test?" I wondered if Fred had gotten a new friend; or was there someone we met in Denver, whose name I wasn't remembering, but with those smiles and winks, I ought to be?? It took a few minutes and a couple rereads before it finally came to me  . So THANKS for thinking in that future direction :D !!
