Take This Waltz...where?

Post by river’s disguise »

B/c I'm a little slow and I've never been great with metaphores and such. Could someone help brake down "Take This Waltz"? There are parts I've gotten but most I'm either not getting or I think I knwo but don't know for sure. Well I've been here taking allyour guys time up. Thank you for your consideration, it feels good to be apart of a mass who can truely appreciate such a talent. Good night all.

I was browsing another Cohen site, and serendipitously came across this article http://www.uwo.ca/english/canadianpoetr ... -jones.htm about Take This Waltz. A lot of the musical terminology was way over my head, but it was still a very interesting read.

Amazing  analysis :D !!! WoW 8) !!! I'm tempted to say this woman is a skilled musician, but perhaps the proper thing might be to say that she's surely skilled in music theory. Would that be right? Incredible how she brings it all together. River's Disguise......this article should be extremely helpful to you, in answering your questions :D .

Thankyou very much for the url. It woudl appear the lady who wrote that article probably had to do some kind of college project and choice this song. I am greatful for her descion. Although it is not exactly what I was looking for and I think there is more than she says. I think the song is a song written to be understood as his own. It's own meaning though the spine of his song comes from another Waltz I believe he has his meanings as well. I will post what I fell he is singing about in the next post..weather that be in a few minutes or what not but I must leave for the moment. Thank you for your responces.

 There is always more to be found in Leonard's songs. That's Truth with a wink because of its truth. I absolutely agree that Leonard had his own truths in there, remaining uncovered by her. She still did an amazingly creditable job bringing hers together, linking the music's magic with the words, and her interpretations. I enjoyed the meanings that she imbued the structure, of the music itself, with. I look forward to reading yours, as well, River's Disguise :D .

I believe firmly that "Take This Waltz" is indeed it's own song. It's spine maybe come from "Little Viennese Waltz" I don't think Charlene(the article writter) gives the proper credit to Leonard. The latter mentioned Waltz maybe have been a model but that's it. I can take an excerpt from one of my own poems and rewrite the poem (or make a new one) and make you think one way or another. Here I'll show you what I mean. The excerpt will be "You yourself rekindle a flare. Of anger, hatered and dispare. Now lets make two different yet same poems...

The pain is here far and wide,
I've lost my love and my pride.
You yourself rekindle a flare,
Of anger, hatred and dispare.

Now if I worte it properly you would thinkg that the "You yourself" is well yourself.

You spit on my grave and won't let me rest,
You drive a dagger up through my chest.
You yourself rekindle a flare,
Of anger, hatred and dispare.

Now! If I did it correctly you'd think I was talking about a girl/boy (girl b/c i'm a guy of course). So inconclusion I think there is moer to the song than this lady has mentioned. Then again she probably did not need to include everythign when she did her report! *L* Well here is what I have gotten out of this wonderful Waltz. Be Mindful I don't have all the lines and verses understood and I may be totally wrong!

Ok...b/c I want to make this song's brake down I will post it later probably in a new post. I respect the song and I feel foolish saying this but I try to honor Leonard Cohen every way I can...kind of like my tributes to him..like for example I always call him Leonard Cohen or Leonard. Nothing shorter than that..obsessive compulsive things such as that:-P Well hope you enjoyed my poetic blabbering. :-D Post you soon!

I like the way you're approaching this, River's Disguise. I enjoyed the totally different slants with the brief poems. I understand fully what you mean with regard to your speaking Leonard's name.

Totally off base..but out of pure curiosity..how old is everyone here? I am guessing I'm the youngest one here at a mear 23 years young. Since Leonard Cohen is not that populare where I come from I'm guessnig most of you are in your 40's? Not that I'm trying to poke fun of age and stuff I don't think there are to many youngin's in here. Just know that I mean no disrespect or insult. I'm totally cool with everything. I was brought up to respect and love all people no matter of thier race, age, gender, religion and even sexual preference. So just know that I am just curiosity to know:-)

I'm so sillie! I totally forgot to thank you Lizzy! I appreciate the complement. I probably don't give myself enough credit when it comes to my poems. They seem to come so easily to me esp when I am inspired! It got to the point that I was trying invent my own type of peotry! I've done everythign I've thought of to make poetry a challenge but it never seems to happen and out of the many poems I have only two am I really proud of. And of course I really have no one to really share it with who can truely appreciate it or critic it with no hesatation. And of course I'm rambling off again Well I'll talk to you people later...Blah! :-P

I have to thank the movie 'Natural Born Killers' and my Dad for finding Leonard. Song 'The Future' stole both mine and my Dad's attention and he asked me to find that song on a record. So I went and found first the NBK soundtrack and then got into looking Leonard's own albums since his songs were the only ones I liked from the soundtrack. That was few years ago :)

Hi Boogahbo ~

Your and your dad's reaction to hearing "The Future" makes phrases like, "the chaff separates from the grain," "the cream rises to the top," and "true class is easily spotted."
