France Tour Dream

Post by Kenadian »

I have been thinking about this for a while. How cool would it be to follow the France mini-tour in March? Especially if this is the final, last, end of tour* :-) (Cue the first The Who final world tour circa 1982 which was cool in Toronto because Joe Jackson opened, but that's another story...or as the next The Who final world tour will be called...The Who's Left). But I digress...

I adore France and to mix Cohen and France would be incroyable! So like any normal fan of both would do, I worked out the tour driving route...

http://tinyurl.com/Cohen-France-2010

With a car/van rental for the duration, you could pack a lot of France & Cohen in the 12 day/6 concert tour de France. Methinks it would make Rick Steves blush!

Then I worked out the (1st class) rail fares...304€ starting in pAris and ending in pAris. I did not consider any side trips or day before/after stopovers, just the city to city.

Either way, there would be plenty of side-trips to take, such as Lille to Brussels/Brugge/Gent, or Reims/Metz to keep it truly a France tour.

Of course, without tix for the shows, this adventure would not be for the faint-hearted. Even without getting into every single show, it still would be a lot of fun just meeting up with fellow fans, local and from abroad.

Well last night I dreamed about it...and damn was it a lot of fun!

Cheers,
Ken(adian)

Hi Ken,

This is funny/strange because I was thinking of this just yesterday....BUT, I don't have the time off. :( I had put all my eggs in one basket hoping for Moscow and have that week off, but now it seems it may be too expensive even for my wasteful ways! Yesterday I took another look at the French concerts and realized what a cool holiday that would be...following Leonard and everyone all around France...great food, wine and scenery! So, I wish you all the best and hope you can find one, two, or ten fans who have the time and think it sounds as great as I do! What fun that would be....and we DO know that you have a certain knack when it comes to concerts ;-) ;-)

All the best,
Diana

How much money have you all got?

Maybe I'm just doing something wrong, but I can just about afford the odd concert ticket.

Well, it all comes down to priorities...or maybe will, desire and opportunity? Just make things happen is what I say.

I totally understand not being able to with jobs, family, and other responsibilities. The biggest expense will be the Cohen tix in my dream, but as I said, meeting other fans would be just as rewarding! And touring France would be awesome. More for me since I have not visited some of those cities/areas of the tour.

Of course, hotels could also be a major cost. There is a site, http://www.couchsurfing.org which embraces travelling and experiencing local cultures for the so inclined. It's travellers helping travellers find a place to rest their head for a night or two...no charge. Well there is a charge...don't treat it like a free hotel, rather treat it like a new friendship. And hostels are an inexpensive option too.

Hell, I'm getting more and more exited about this tour :-) A mid-sized car can comfortably hold 4 with adequate luggage...who's in?

Cheers,
Ken(adian)

Well, assuming a lot of things fall into place, anyway. And assuming you wouldn't mind the company of a somewhat reserved 23-year-old fifth-generation-Berkeley-native free spirit who has forgotten almost all of her high school French. :(
But--very tentatively--me!

Well, early March in this ever-climate-changing world may require warmer clothing anyway.

Yes, I know, things always have to fall in place...company of a Cohen fan is always welcome...French will not be a problem.

However, the cost breakdown would need 4 for the 'rental'. Anything less is better by rail, which is relaxing and awesome too.

And as I said before, couchsurfing is a great way to travel and meet locals, hopefully some local Cohen fans.

Cheers,
Ken(adian)

RegularCliche wrote:Well, it's officially a possibility for me. I'll have more definite info within the next few days, but after some stubborn pleas about scheduling, my possible conflict should be done by either February 19-21 or 26-28.
On the other hand, the fact that my anniversary is March 10th slipped my mind before amidst dreams of Leonard Cohen and France. This means I would have to fly back either the 8th or 9th and therefore would only be able to be there for the first 4 shows. That is, unless I can talk the boyfriend into coming to France too... but between his workaholic tendencies, his dislike for Leonard Cohen and his utter lack of any desire to travel, I don't think that's too likely.
I like you..."officially a possibility"...we both have commitment issues :-)

I am slowly putting together an itinerary for the Tour de France, one that includes rail, car and camper van (no beethoven). The car and camper could include anyone, for any segment...kinda like a bus with regular stops, but no return. It looks like your stop is Marseille :-)

Cheers,
