Re: Music You're Listening To
Hi Diance I am so sorry to resurrect an old thread but Nick Cave is my all time favourite artist, just nudging LC into second spot so I hate to reply to you!Diane wrote:Because I recently saw something about 'duende' that included a piece by Nick Cave, I dug out my Best of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds cd (1998), which I have seldom heard, and am loving it, esp. The Ship Song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKlaV-9Vzsk. The only other album I have of his is Nocturama so I wonder if I am missing any particular 'must have' from Mr Cave.
It seems you enjoy the more mellow Nick Cave music so I would suggest you listen to the albums The Boatman Calls and No More Shall We Part first. The try Murder Ballads and if you like something a little heavier, in my opinion Nick Caves masterpiece is Tender Prey. Let Love In is also great.
Hell, ALL the albums are great!
Re: Music You're Listening To
Thank you, songwriter, I have taken note of your suggestions. I think Mr Cave first came onto my radar when I was impressed with his covers, and his stage presence, at the Came So Far For Beauty Wilner tribute to LC in Dublin a few years back.I do need some more albums. Welcome to the forum.
Speaking of fine live performers, I have just sent for Mark Bego's biography of Billy Joel, and in anticipation have been working my way through his albums. At the mo I am on 52nd Street. Just found this live rendition of (the latter part of) Until the Night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTdAxpBHv_E

Re: Music You're Listening To

Hi Steven,
I downloaded 2 albums of Ravi Shankar recently and wanted to respond after listening to the second one above, London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andre Previn. The music for both albums is composed by RS and is essentially the London orchestra playing Indian classical music plus sitar, a very unique and intriguing sound. These guys were making world music before the term came into existence. The tabla/percussion is replaced with drums/cymbals and is very prominent with a number of solos which is unusual in western classical music.
Preceding these is the historic album Ravi Shankar made with Yehudi Menuhin in the late 60s (West meets East) which is slightly different, it is more of an indian setting with Menuhin joining him on violin - a vinyl copy of it has been in my family forever. These 3 are a terrific set.
terrific solo from Menuhin on the first track of West meets East:

Re: Music You're Listening To
Hi Kush,
Thanks for the Menuhin link. Yes, it is terrific.
The two Ravi Shankar CDs I own are: Bridges: The Best of Ravi Shankar and The Ravi Shankar Collection:
Ragas & Talas. Just played both CDs; prefer the 2nd one by a wide margin.
