Very nice review! It is a pleasure to read reviews by people who are so intimately acquainted with Leonard's work, and truly appreciate and understand its incredible depth. A lot of the reviews I've read of Old Ideas, while extremely positive, betray a fairly deep lack of knowledge/understanding about Leonard's past work (and about Leonard in general). If I read one more review that says "this is Cohen's best work in decades," and then explicitly or implicitly dismisses his last four (or five) studio albums, I will scream. Of course, Old Ideas is among Leonard's best work, ever, but that certainly doesn't mean that the last few albums were deficient, and I wish people would stop trashing them. (Sorry, but I just had to get that off my chest!)

Thank you for sharing this wonderful review!

Well said, Lisa! Few reviewers have proven themselves really worthy of writing about Leonard Cohen, but this one - yes, I would give it 5 (out of 5) glowing stars! (Maybe we should have the same rating system for the reviews, that the reviewers have for the albums. . .)

I liked the review and like Mike I am not drawn to plinking synth music - except in the hands of Cohen. A good thoughtful review. Didn't think he was dissing previous albums... Death of... & Dear Heather must have struck most of us as er... out of the mold!! Having said that one of the most moving things LC has done in my book (To A Teacher) is on DH. And I adore his treatment of Go No More A Roving. Who'd a thought Byron was funky!
