I may be wrong but I can't remember seeing anything about this fantastic singer in this section. I have just been listening to one of his lesser known songs.

Roy Orbison
Re: Roy Orbison
I don't know that song, but he was one of my early favourites and I still have some vinyl that has moved house with me a few times.

I often watch the Black and White Night DVD, I just love it! I think Leonard's about the only musician missing from the amazing line up!

Re: Roy Orbison
They're all great songs and musios but I must admit that my best house mover Roy O song is the one and only:
Only The Lonely
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOPah8Kby90
Also I've just found a hidden 45 rpm single record with "Working For The Man" and "Leah" on the flip side which can do the job too!
.....and Mary that Black & White DVD sounds good - I haven't heard it before that I can remember - certainly requires further investigation.
Thanks everyone for reminding me of one of the best voices around.
...Now just have a guess as to who it was that said when their song wasn't working out, "We'll have to Orbisize it!"
Eight artists who were inspired by Roy Orbison
Also in Leonard's top ten songs at #6 is Roy's "House Without Windows"

http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/F ... ison-1111/Cohen so idolized Orbison that he’d sometimes instruct his band to “Orbisize” certain songs. Cohen’s biographer wrote of Roy’s immense influence on Cohen, saying, “In rehearsal Cohen would tell the band to ‘make it like Roy Orbison would do it.’ The musicians had a picture of Orbison pasted into their chart folder.”

Re: Roy Orbison
Yes, I was listening to the Wilburys the other day and ended up on Amazon buying vols 1 and 2, and, as an added extra, the Very Best of Roy Orbison. My original 45s have got lost somewhere, and it was good to hear his wonderful voice again. Thanks for starting this thread, Tony - good to know Mr O is not forgotten.
Re: Roy Orbison
B4real, you can hear so much Orbison in Bruce can't you.

Re: Roy Orbison
Yes Diane,
You sure can and here's the reason why:
"In 1975, when I went in to the studio to make 'Born To Run', I wanted to make a record with words like Bob Dylan that sounded like Phil Spector. But, most of all, I wanted to sing like Roy Orbison."
-- Bruce Springsteen
Springsteen namechecks Orbison in his hit “Thunder Road”. The vocal sound of which was inspired by Roy and he pays homage to him with the line:
“Like a vision she dances across the porch / As the radio plays Roy Orbison singing for the lonely / Hey that’s me and I want you only.”
....a reference to Orbison's 1960 hit, "Only The Lonely."
Springsteen also reverently inducted Orbison into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and can be spotted in the Grammy-nominated videotaped concert "Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night".
Bruce Springsteen's Speech for Roy Orbison's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Jan 1987:
"In 1970, I rode for fifteen hours in the back of a U-haul truck to open for Roy Orbison at the Nashville Music Fair. It was a summer night and I was 20 years old, and Orbison came out in dark glasses, a dark suit and he played some dark music. In 1974, just prior to going into the studio to record my album Born To Run, I was looking at Duane Eddy for his guitar sound and I was listening to a collection of Phil Spector's records and Orbison's All-Time Greatest Hits. I'd lay in bed at night with just the lights of my stereo on and I'd hear 'Crying', 'Love Hurts', 'Running Scared', 'Only The Lonely', and 'It's Over' filling my room. Orbison's voice was unearthly. He had the ability, like all great Rock and Rollers, to sound like he dropped in from another planet and yet get the stuff that was right to the heart of what you were livin' in today, and it was how he opened up your vision. I carry his records with me when I go on tour today, and I'll always remember what he means to me and what he meant to me when I was young and afraid to love. In 1975, when I went into the studio to record, Born To Run, I wanted to make a record with words like Bob Dylan, that sounded like Phil Spector's productions, but most of all I wanted to sing like Roy Orbison. Now, everybody knows that nobody sings like Roy Orbison."

Well, today I stumbled across more of these clips and Mary, you are so right! Talk about a star studded line up! It's excellent.B4real wrote:.....and Mary that Black & White DVD sounds good - I haven't heard it before that I can remember - certainly requires further investigation.

A Black & White Night, the live album, was compiled and released posthumously from the television special. The album was released in February 1989 and included the songs "Blue Bayou" and "Claudette" that were cut from the original broadcast for time. However it did not include the song "Blue Angel" which was cut from the original broadcast for the same reason.
All tracks composed by Roy Orbison; except where indicated
1. "Only The Lonely" (Orbison, Joe Melson)
2. "Dream Baby" (Cindy Walker)
3. "Blue Bayou" (Orbison, Joe Melson)
4. "The Comedians" (Elvis Costello)
5. "Ooby Dooby" (Dick Penner, Wade Moore)
6. "Leah" (Orbison, Joe Melson)
7. "Running Scared" (Orbison, Joe Melson)
8. "Uptown" (Orbison, Joe Melson)
9. "In Dreams" (Orbison)
10. "Crying" (Orbison, Joe Melson)
11. "Candy Man" (Fred Neil, Beverly "Ruby" Ross)
12. "Go Go Go (Down the Line)"
13. "Mean Woman Blues" (Claude Demetrius)
14. "(All I Can Do is) Dream You" (Billy Burnette, David Malloy)
15. "Claudette" (Orbison)
16. "It's Over" (Orbison, Bill Dees)

I have now watched all of the above songs as videos. Bruce was like a kid in a candy shop.....and Jackson with his short swept back hairstyle!
I love the violins, of course! It was great to see Roy's fellow musios paying trbute to him. Seems everyone had a wonderful night
