Hi,

Elevated (no pun intended) incorporation of the metaphorical "tower' in master level songwriting is found in songs of Leonard Cohen ("Tower of Song," "Suzanne") and Townes Van Zandt's "Tower Song." This commonality isn't what prompts this post... just wanting to share with you the Townes song, and considering why it is that many songwriters who value the "art" element in songs recognize just how great these songs are, and that the mass public, for the most part, has never had the opportunity to even hear such works. And if the exposure were, for whatever reason, ubiquitous, to what larger
extent would the songs be recognized as great by others (despite the usual fare of commercially driven shallow songs)?

Hi,

Just came across a video of Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, and others performing "Pancho and Lefty." It's a performance
rich in eloquence and sensitivity.

Hi Kush,

Thanks for the links. Saw Steve Earle last month in performance at a festival. He didn't perform
any Townes Van Zandt songs. Thought that he probably would.

I know you'll enjoy this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6bZ37nexSY. (The song is not written by Townes Van Zandt.)

Hi Steven,

I know the song but had not seen or heard this Music Fog version before. They make some really great videos of acoustic live performances. Guy Clark looks old these days.

Hi,

The author of I'll Be Here In The Morning: The Songwriting Legacy of Townes Van Zandt will be returning for another interview on the radio show linked to earlier in this thread. (The podcast podcast of the first interview is still accessible.) The interview will stream over the internet on Friday, October 19, 2012 at approximately 3:00 p.m. ET at:
http://www.wche1520.com/entertainmentandculture.htm.

Watched the documentary Townes Van Zandt: Be Here To Love Me this weekend for the first time. It's on DVD. The Los Angeles Times spoke of this 2005 documentary as "An EXTRAORDINARY documentary about an extraordinary man." I agree.
