Chutney Soca

Post by Kush »

Chutney or Chutney soca music is the music indigenous to people of Indian heritage in Trinidad, Guyana and Suriname in the Caribbean whose ancestors were brought in as indentured labor 150-200 years ago from India. It combines elements of calypso and reggae with Bollywood and traditional Indian folk. It has a repetitive and infectious, insistent beat.

Catch meh lovah (Sunita)

Tek Sunita (Nadia's reply)

This two-part song is about an interesting triangle that recalls Famous Blue Raincoat (well...depending on how you interpret FBR). Nadia treats Sunita to a flake of her life and she was nobody's wife after that. a non cerebral fun FBR set to Bollywood and calypso.

and one more...

An 80 old lady in a village in Guyana sings a traditional Indian song or bhajan - very close to the rhythm and melody of chutney music

Hi Kush,

Enjoyed the videos in this thread, including the performances of a few very attractive women in some of them.

Touche on the very attractive women and nice videos Steven. Think I am catching the island fever, usually happens when the weather starts getting colder. I develop the urge to visit my Caribbean cousins with the funny language and accent.

I leave you with a song from a different island...

more interesting videos:

As soon as Sajana Reach America (a love story that did not go so well) by Omesh Singh

A cautionary tale for hot blooded Indian males looking for exotic brides from the islands - happens more often than you might think!

Bison by Nisha B

Not quite sure what the above is about but it is sexy and suggestive. There is something subversively Hindu about it what with the holy cows (or bison) and Kamasutra etc etc. Think Leonard Cohen might get a chuckle out of this one.
