God is hiding in the closet. I know this because I can hear him giggle. He’s a terrible hider,
always gives himself away. I’m in a good mood, so I pretend to not hear him and enter the room;
go about my business of picking up this and that, and putting clothes from the basket to the drawer.
I hear him snort – God always snorts when he tries hard not to laugh. I pick up one of your ironed
shirts and head for the closet. I swear I can hear him squirm now, ready to pop out. I grab
the handle and pull quick ... poof ... the closet is empty.
ohhh that God – what a joker.

God is hiding in the closet
Re: God is hiding in the closet
Cate,
I always love reading your stuff. I remember when I read the Bible that my impression of God was that he was an omnipotent toddler. I, of course, was annoyed, but you've taken the childish God and made him a jokester.
I love that God is a terrible hider - always gives himself away. I think it's something that people who spend their lives searching (give me a sign, God!) would like to hear.
I also kind of wonder if you wrote this about a real child and then thought, "Hmm, this would be so much more interesting if I put 'God' everywhere 'Timmy' is."

Love this. And it gives an interesting twist to "coming out of the closet.

Thank you Abby and Rags!
Hi Manna, I always love reading your stuff as well.
It started with the image of god hiding in a closetI also kind of wonder if you wrote this about a real child
a memory of my son was definitely fussed in though. Once, when he was much younger, I opened the closet door where he was hiding and saw that he had his eyes closed, so I pretended that I could not to see him and continued my search.
