Leonard Cohen Television Promo, Spain & Links to TVE videos

Post by sturgess66 »

A video recently uploaded to YouTube by "Jon Renes"

Entitled "Leonard Cohen Entrevista Clip clip hurra TVE 1990"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QXNd8jcwhI

It looks to be a promotional video prepared for television - but I'm not sure how to identify - i.e., from whence come the video clips of Leonard eating the popsicle/dreamsicle, etc. :D

Maybe someone here will have more information.

Re: Leonard Cohen Television Promotional Video Spain - TVE 1

Yes, it is a promotional video for "Cohen Live" made by the TV program Clip Clip Hurra.

The video is filmed at the Retiro Park which is the largest park in the centre of Madrid, close to the Prado Museum. Retiro means "retreat" and it belonged to the monarchy until the XIX century when it became a public park. It is filled with monuments, sculptures and galleries.

We can see Leonard Cohen walking by the fountain at the start of the Walk of Statues, the Crystal Palace, some of the ponds and the lake next to the monument to King Alfonso XII with the semicircular colonnade.

If ". . .TVE 1990" refers to the year the video was released, it doesn't make sense. The album "Cohen Live" wasn't released until 1994, & it contains recordings of performances from 1988 & 1993. The narrator of the video also mentions the album "The Future" which was released in 1992. Unless "1990" is part of the name of the TV station, but that doesn't seem likely. It's not very important, but just saying. . .this video couldn't have been made or released in 1990.

hazey - thanks for the information about the locale, etc.
holydove - thanks - and yes - all those things confused me as well. I could not fit "1990" into "Cohen Live" - and audio of "The Partisan" was also included in the video - confusing things further.
The video scenes with Leonard must have been made well after 1990. And Leonard reminds that he has an album of live songs.
A bit of a mishmash I guess - but whatever - it's all somewhat interesting.

IMHO the video is made and released in 1994 and it's the person who uploads it to YouTube that gives the wrong title (the year is obviously not 1990, though the TV program's name - simply Clip Clip Hurra, no 1990- is correct).

The narrator introduces the video stating that Leonard Cohen is in Spain to promote his NEW live album and later talks about "The Future" and the tour that came afterwards. In the original language there is no doubt that the promotion is for an album released after the tour.

Thanks again, Hazey. I think you have clarified completely - as well as providing good background information about the locale, etc.
And - I guess it really is not a "mishmash" - but confusion arose over "1990" being included in the title of the YouTube upload - and 1990 does not refer to the year.

I changed the title of this tread - because I am adding links to other videos available at the TVE - some really good things here! :D
Maarten Massa created a thread in 2012 that included a download link for three of the videos from TVE. The download link has expired now - but I've added the live links to the videos below.
Maarten's link to the interview at MarieM's WebHeights site still works.

Re: Leonard Cohen Television Promo, Spain & Links to TVE vid

Post by hazey »

sturgess66- thanks a lot for providing the links to all these videos. I've watched many of them on TVE, but it's always nice to see they're all linked to the forum and to have the opportunity to watch them again.

I am the first to admit that watching Spanish videos can be somewhat confusing. In my opinion some Spaniards, journalists or not, have a tendency to talk or write without contrasting information or interpret meanings before drawing conclusions. This is also the reason why some titles on YouTube are not correct.

On the other hand, many of the programs and interviews on RTE are interesting because they are spontaneous and funny. I feel that Leonard Cohen feels comfortable when the conversation is tongue-in-cheek and there is a bit of ambiguity, or even poetry?, because of the different languages. However, there are some serious Spanish interviewers as well :)

I will certainly be watching some of the linked videos in the next days, thanks again.
