Hi Sparklebhoy,

Strwange coincidence, I went to the store today and they were having a sale on books. I bought one for 50 cents. It was a campy werewolf thing - I haven't read it, but I'm sure it will not go down in history. I bought it because of the cover and the author's name, Sparkle Hayter, then, I saw your name. Stranghe coincidence. Hi! My name's Linda and I think I need a neurological workup.

Anywhay, my votes in on this thread. FCC. Period.

See ya,
Linda.

Songs from a room has by far the best rear cover. It seems like an ideal existence, a sparse room with a typewriter, a chess board, a bed, a skull and a beautiful woman sitting at a desk with no underwear. All on an island in Greece. I dont see why Leonard was so depressed at the time. I would live in that room (and the life that room is symbolic of) without a second thought.

Hi There,

Even though the scene may seem idyllic to an outsider, it's tough to say what was going on in LC's mind at the time. Sometimes, what looks like the perfect set-up, isn't.

For instance, someone walking by your house, might look inside and think you have the nicest place and a nice life judging by what you own and what it represents. You might not agree for any number of reasons like the bills are due, your car is in the shop, the baby cries day and night, whatever.

Writing full time on a Greek island with a beautiful woman in your life may look ideal, but there was likely much beneath the surface. After all, he did leave it behind. Although, it doesn't seem so bad to me either.

I think my favorites are Various Positions and Dear Heather. I like Heather because it is so in synch with the title of the album. Various positions because it seems to fit with mood of the material.

Cohen Covers

Hi,
I'd go with the front of New Skin... followed closely by Live Songs & the back of Songs of Love & Hate.
For me the former places his music in context, the second describes the music inside & the latter well just the words Transfigured Night do it for me.
Cheers

This should have been a poll, don't you think?

I go with everyone who said "I'm Your Man". A man with a banana singing "First We Take Manhattan"... That's hilarious!

Ooh, I was going to say that. there's so much poetry in that photo.
I also like the front cover I have to say. It suits the album.
I also like his banana pictures!
Various positions, though I don't have the lp, I don't like... and Love and hate is not so good either, I guess, but the rest I like :D
A sip of wine, a cigarette
And then it's time to go
I tidied up the kitchenette
I tuned the old banjo
-10 new songs, Boogie Street

I'm just reading some of these old posts and I can't believe only one person mentoned "Songs of Love and Hate." To me it's the perfect album cover and it lets you know what you're in for with the album. You have the black background and there's something slightly insane about his smile in the picture. I think it represents the content of that album well.

That's a good point you made about how the cover of SOLAH shows you 'what you're in for' in terms of the content of the album. I think most of us were looking at the pics from an aesthetic point of view. FFC has the greatest pic of Leonard - and Shane's comment re: I'm Your Man is good, but these photos don't give a hint to the 'content' as you pointed out. Only nice shots.

Best of...

I would have to say one of my favorites is still the "Best of" album, where he's adjusting his tie or something in front of a mirror, and he's wearing that ridiculously great fitted jacket, with some hotel room in the background...maybe just because it's the first one I bought.
And quiet is the thought of you
the file on you complete
Except what we forgot to do
A thousand kisses deep...

Various Positions.I also think Various Positions is one of his best[if not his best] albums.

I agree with Kevin about Songs of Love and Hate, which for me is a close tie with New Skin for the Old Ceremony for best cover.

Greatest Hits has a cool photo. I also like Field Commander Cohen and Dear Heather isn't bad.

I have a harder time picking the worst cover: Ten New Songs combines bad Photoshop effects with tacky gradients. Cohen Live has a hideous color scheme and an ugly font. Songs of LC has the rather ridiculous font effect, but is at least simpler than the previous two. I think I'd have to go with Cohen Live.

All the other covers are OK though, I think.
