Heh, I think that song is called "The Greatest Country and Western Song Ever Wrote" or something to that effect! It's a great song, I agree. :)

I don't know why DAC is so angry. Perhaps it's a reaction to the state of country music today or maybe he is just playing too many gigs to pay off all the child support he owes, haha. (Not like that's something to laugh at, I'm just making an assumption!) Who knows, he may be a bit of a weirdo but I think it adds to his charm!

I think when I was younger, my mom gave me a perm from hell - re:Twisted Sister. It was just my own sister who had the bleach blonde metal 'do at the time, haha.

Well, in my defence, it only took me a minute to figure it out. You were typing gnr and when I went back to Linda's post, it was GnR - then, of course, my embarrassment knew no bounds.

Yes, Dee Snider. Of course there has always been 'good rock' out there, but it's fun when these characters come out of hiding! Who would have thought of Ozzie Ozbourne, the TV star!? In his hey-day, that would have been, well, sacrilegious.

I don't think I'm that far under the rock am I? That was pretty 'easy'. Knowing you, though, there's quite a few stored away in your head that I would never guess in million years. Frankly it's amazing these people are still around. Oh, you heard Long John Baldry died? Too bad. I loved him for years. He spent the last 25 yrs in Vancouver so was very much 'on the scene' there. Scary in a way. Rockers I remember very well, are now dying. Ask not for whom the bell tolls....

I spent most of the summer listening to Bonnie Prince Billy's "I See A Darkness" album. Also: Lee Hazlewood - Summer Wine, Fred Neil - Dolphins.

Hi Shane,

I've always liked Lee Hazlewood myself. He has, or rather had, a nice voice, certainly given to country music. But, he could do all sorts of things. Have you heard the song Come Spend the Morning With Me? It's written by LC, but Hazlewood recorded it. Quite good actually.

Oh, my. You are the first one to have said "I spent most of the summer...", so yes, I'd say that we're getting pretty close to the end of it all. We'll be singing Christmas carols before we know it!!

I don't think I heard that song, I'm a rather fresh Hazlewood fan. I will do my best to find it.

Thank you for the tip!

i don't kow ANY of these people. is that bad? i mean, i know a lot of obscure, older stuff that probably 90% of people my age wouldn't know. but... that's way obscure for me what you guys are talking about.

Listening I See a Darkness thru the summer, that's quite an experience  Though, it's masterpiece.

Who's John Baldry?

Song Leonard wrote for Hazlewood is discovered quite recently here. I have an MP3 online (on my free space) but I hesitate to link it. Maybe we should ask Jarkko, the link would be available only from this post.?

Tom,

You've never heard of "Long John Baldry"? You know that line: don't talk no boogie woogie to the kind of rock and roll! He was extremely influential in the 60's  . He uncovered a lot of talent in Britain. There were many, many artists that worked with him before going on to their own careers.

Hi T -

Well frankly I was going to have to do a little google search on most of Shane's summer music. It seems that Hazelwood is the only one I knew (that was nice to send the link, Tom - I have a copy also, but I don't know how to link anything). This little corner of the board is my somewhat selfish attempt at trying to expand my musical horizons. I felt that I needed to add to my music and I'm wondering what everyone else listens to. I know there are a lot of music threads and mentions here and there, but now and again, I like to see lists of peoples choices.

Shane:

I'm glad you connected to something (the link Tom kindly sent you). If you pass this way again, I'd be interested to know more about the music you mentioned - I See a Darkness - that one has me wondering.

Thanks all.
Linda.

I think I've been pretty much inundated with Nick Cave info - he'll be on my shopping list (or Christmas list).

Shane,

Summer Wine - do you mean the old Hazlewood tune with 'Nancy'? Boy, does that take me back!

Get it, it's beautiful. It's dark and sad, that's why Tom said that listening to it in the summer is quite an experience. The title track was covered by Johnny Cash on his album Solitary Man. Both versions are stunning, but I prefer the original. Songs like Death to Everyone, Madeline Mary and Nomadic Revery (All Around) make this album one of my all time favorites.

I leave you with a quote:

Today was another day full of dread
But I never said I was afraid
Dread and fear should not be confused
By dread I'm inspired, by fear I'm amused
