Wow, thank you, Bobbie; I must admit I never expected such a detailed practical answer. I was just indulging in a bit of whining... Damn! Edmonton looks even farther than I thought. I´d do almost anything for the chance of finding myself in the same car with Henning again, be it even a taxi (and for seeing you too, of course!) but not sure if this is in my power... Well, you never know; in two years, I may become a famous architect or maybe marry a rich Cohen-man... (come on, rich men, please find me, I´ll be almost 30 in Edmonton!)

Thanks, Don, my Berlin man! I googled to the http://www.train-canada.net site, and learned it's two nights from Toronto to Edmonton, for 1372 CAN dollars... what's expensive, and it seems it's only one way ticket (Toronto-Edmonton: http://www.train-canada.net/via_railprices3.htm). There are *very* cheap flights from Croatia to Toronto & Montreal (330 Euros, return ticket). I can fly also directly to Edmonton (from Slovenia), but I think I'll do as many of you Americans and Canadians were doing in Europe before and after Berlin: travel over the continent. It's stupid to get directly to Edmonton with airplane on the first day of event, and then fly directly back to home. But it's in two years, who knows where will I be till then.

Eclispe was mentioned in Berlin, I think it's week before the event (if dates are confirmed).

Here's little map of Canadian railway, you can imagine the distances from it, Laura (it was also my first realisation WHERE are we going in 2008... I just hope that after that we will not sing "we’ll never, never reach the moon, at least not the one that we’re after"...

Well, there certainly IS an eclipse, but it will be visible only in the Arctic territories of Canada at sunrise.

This is a detailed map:

http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~jander/tot2008/nunavut.png

That means that one have to travel approx. 1850 km to see the eclipse.

A few bits of information about Cambridge Bay (city near the eclipse):

I'd rather wait for an eclipse closer to some warmer place.

Where is the 2010 event

Post by evelyn »

Hmmm, interesting possibilities..

I'm thinking, fly to Vancouver, take the train to Calgary, then on to
Edmunton for the Event!

Suggestions for 2010 Event

Post by JRBAcct »

In no particular preference:

Jarkko's country - Finland; or Sweden or Norway ...

Italy.

Ireland.

And when we come back to North America in 2012 - I am lobbying for Ottawa, Canada where Leonard played many a lonesome night at Le Hibou and then returned many times to perform in this wonderful city :D

2012 Event

Post by JRBAcct »

In response to Tom Sakic's comment re 2012 event to be held in Los Angles.

I thought we lived in a domocratic world - why does the Leonard Cohen Event not have an exit poll of the attendees vs. arbitrary decisions event in event out ...

Being Canadian and knowing Leonard Cohen's roots are Canadian I am sure his sentiments would be similar.

Having attended three events my, memory serves me well, I do not recall an opinion ever being requisitioned from the people who live his music ... the people ...

Maybe the event should die and live forever in Hydra ...

Cheers

A Canadian fan.

A poll would be waste of time if we do not have concrete alternatives!
We would need more than one committee/team ready to organize the Event in their country/city, with a clear-cut and realistic plan. Only then we would have something to vote on. So far we never have had more than one person ready to organize the Event. Are you ready, Jack?

Yes, it really has seemed to me to be, "Who's willing to step up to the plate next?" situation. Since it requires carving out huge blocks of time and consistent, ongoing commitment, to pull it off at all much less well.

In Berlin, I witnessed what seemed to be that level of commitment regarding Croatia. I've seen it here, ongoing, with Tom's research, cataloguing, and input regarding Leonard... and I saw it there, with Tom's, serious friend and Tom, in discussing the possibilities.

I'm guessing that some of the others who have suggested alternatives probably are and have other committed people in mind. It's still got to be more than a wish list of where people would like to visit next, with those other than the ones who would actually be involved doing the voting.

Once a viable list of real possibilities has been compiled, a vote would seem appropriate, for those intending to attend.

London could be an option it is where Leonard first heard of Hydra and he lived here for a while. I appreciate the main factor needs to be the organising committee.

And he wrote Favourite Game there... I guess that 37 people from UK, who enlisted for Berlin Event, can organise the similar in London?

Someone said: "There’s one song of yours, ‘Sisters of Mercy’, that I particularly like. The lyrics are so enigmatic that for years I thought it must be about either nuns or prostitutes. I was surprised to learn how autobiographical the song is…"

Well, I have also been thinking in prostitues... Then, what's the story, if you don't mind to tell?

In fact, is there a book to interpret these lyrics? Or do you recommend one book in particular?

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum, Bascombe.

Sisters of Mercy has nothing to do with nuns or prostitutes. You can find the full story somewhere on this site, but basically in Canada LC found two girls freezing in a doorway with nowhere to stay, and he let them stay in his place. They both fell asleep in his bed, while he sat in a chair and wrote the song overnight. As the song points out, nothing sexual happened, but it was clearly one of those brief moments of fusion for which we all live.
