Ah, thank you, Andrei... and for repeating the question, itself, along with your answer! I just remembered, coming here and reading your posting, that someone [I just scrolled back and couldn't find it, so must've missed it] commented that this was a thread I'd initiated, yet not answered the questions. I'll do that, later.

Your answers, Andrei, seem to support what several of us here are saying, that the meanings in the songs unfold as one's own understanding of the world grows 8) .

Ohhhh... I wish your father weren't making fun of you for your interest in Leonard... you may still have the 'last laugh' on that, though... if he ever really comes to seriously listen to Leonard's music. It sounds like your mother is pleased with your find... or at least recognizes the importance of your discovery. How old are you now, Andrei?

I am 15 now Lizzy, so I still have quite a bit more to go to fully discover his words.

Oh, that's wonderful, Andrei 8) ! I wonder if you may be the youngest, current member participating here :D ! I'm so glad I asked. I wish Roberta from the Sony Discussion Board were still around. You would really enjoy her!! She's older now, but was 15-16 at the time... approx. 4-5 years ago.

In today's world, you may understand more than we realize... however, there are a number of us adults still discovering some of the many layers of meaning in Leonard's songs, poetry, and writing. So, join the crowd 8) .

[Important Health Tip of the Day: Process the information found in the News section, in the "LC Portraits by Silvain Poirier" thread, with a responsible parent or other adult. :) ]

I'm so glad you're here, Andrei! It would be wonderful if you participated more in the threads, so we can get a better sense of a younger person's views of all things Leonard.

(1) How old were you when you first listened to Leonard? 20 I think

(2) How much did you understand of the sexual/violence references? Much of the sexual; none of the violence (until I read Beautiful Losers, not long ago)

(3) How did hearing these lyrics cause you to feel? Really fxxking happy :)

(4) What age do you feel would be the most age-appropriate for children to first listen to Leonard? as early as possible - I had my first baby, Otis, 5 months ago, and played Leonard to him in the womb and intermittently since - I'll let u know how that goes!

(5) Should parental- or adult-guidance be a part of these initial listening experiences? No! Certainly not at first.

Thank you for your responses, Katrina... and, again, for repeating the questions themselves, prior to answering them. It makes it so much easier.

I enjoyed your answers and love that you played Leonard to Otis during the time he lived in your womb; and that you've continued doing it intermittently since. I'm guessing there may be some other, 'baby' music that you've been playing for him, too, since his birth.

Congratulations on your new-to-this-world Otis :D .

I'll reply where I feel I can post something valuable to the conversation (I hope that 50% of my posts won't still be irrelevent or "wrong"... when there is no wrong answer!  )

Hi Andrei ~

It'll be good to read you in any case. I saw you mention, over in the duet thread, guitar and piano as relate to yourself. Do you play both? Do you play acoustically on the guitar? What songs of Leonard's are you most interested in playing/learning?

Thanks Lizzy!! And yes, Otis has had quite a range of music played to him already! Weirdly, he finds the Chemical Brothers very relaxing!! But I hope Leonard will be his favourite - I'm doing my utmost to make it o, lol!! :D

Hi Katrina ~

I'm not familiar with the Chemical Brothers, but their name sounds like they could be a bit raucous. Is that so? Here's hoping on Leonard, at least later in life, if not early on... keep up the good mission :D .

Hi Lizzy

Well actually, though I do not play piano (many of my friends from a while back have, though Electric Guitar, which I do not care for as much, seems to be the most popular instrument here), I am learning to play Acoustic, and honestly, this was only after listening to Songs of Love and Hate...

What I really want to play on guitar, besides any song from that album is A Singer Must Die, even though it is not as Guitar-based as it could be, I believe that it would sound very good if played correctly on the guitar... I just need to find the music, :)

Now... sorry for getting of topic

Hi Andrei ~

You're not off-topic, at all. You're one of the youngest ones on the Forum, and I'm interested in what you think and feel. Yes... I prefer acoustic guitar or any instrument that's acoustic. Anything that can be played in the middle of a desert, without relying on electricity, sounds good to me.

I can imagine the songs you've cited, by mentioning the album 8) . So, are you working to fully adapt "A Singer Must Die" to guitar?

Andrei, There is a full chord index linked to this site.On the main index page click on 'Links' and in the list that comes up is'Chords of Leonard Cohen' a complete chords archive. I hope this helps!
If you read music and would prefer this to tablature, I may be able to email you the music from the relevant song book.

Hi Lizzy

Well I will certainly try to do that! I doubt that I will be able to perform it till about 6-10 months from now when I have a general understanding of how to play the guitar (I am learning without a tutor, so it takes a bit more time and I play when I have some on my hands) and am able to take the melody off of the music in the song...

As for Songs of Love and Hate, all of the songs are acoustically based (some with piano as well, as best as I can remember, I have been listening to his earliest two recently), and I really want to learn Dress Rehearsal Rag, but not so much play it, I don't want to "scare" friends and family with some of the lyrics, just know a very quick-choice song. Diamonds in the Mine, because I want to have a sort of "sing-along" LC song to see if I can get someone to get into Leonard Cohen (a way to bring the lyrics upon someone who is focusing on the melody). Though I only named my intention with two of them, and I can have seperate ones for each song, because once I get into learning his songs, I plan to learn all of the ones that I will be able to play on Guitar... let me just say that I will learn the rest because it's Leonard Cohen!

Hi Andrei ~

I'm looking at the times of your and Davido's posting above yours... and I have a strong feeling, given what you wrote, that you haven't read his, yet. Check it out 8) .

Please feel free to share your reasons for your other choices on learning Leonard's songs. You're getting a great headstart.

Hullo Lizzy & Davido

Thank you very much for helping me find the tablature, and thank you Lizzy for reminding me, because I did in fact miss it

When I have time I will post my reasons.... maybe in a while as I learn the music...
