Thank you for the presentation of your list, Lightning... that's what I always want to know is why! A list is a list is a list... and, even though we might be able to intuit things about a person from them, it's not nearly so enlightening and satisfying as their particular reasons why they made those choices.

Thanks!!

WONDERFUL to see you here ~ and that Jacques and Loreena haven't stolen you completely away 8) .

And the devil's court jester, our generation's Oscar Wilde and an astonishing songwriter Martyn Jacques, frontman of the Tiger Lillies.

A lot of creative energy whirling, swirling, twirling, and spiraling around you these days [not that it's that different from your norm  ]... I'm glad you're breaking free of the magnetic pull of all that to still come here and contribute in your serious, substantive way 8) .

Please give Tuli and your rest my best... especially Tuli :D .

I'd gotten the list narrowed down to 15, then I saw where someone had pointed out the list had rapidly gone from "best" to "favorite." I know these are not the same, so I thought maybe I only had to narrow it down to 20, and post it as two lists, bests & favorites! There is some cross-talk here, so I was unable to separate the lists.

(In the order in which they were randomly played during the selection process.)
1. One of us Cannot be Wrong
Because it's such a twisted story told with such twisted, poetic language.
2. Last Year's Man
What I really like about this is the version I listen to. LC's voice is doing this thing that could either be called vibrato or a nervous quavering. Also, I can hear him breathing between the lines.
3. Field Commander Cohen
I can hear him smiling while he's singing the opening bit about Castro, and it has that creepy movie piano bit at the end.
4. Diamonds in the Mine
Because he screams. AAAAAGHHGHG!
5. Night Comes On
no reason, well, no specific reason.
6. Light as the Breeze
I can only say, mmmmmm
7. Is This What You Wanted
I was blue jeans, you were Armani.
8. Ballad of the Absent Mare
Me, sucker for true ballads. Plus it's just a beautiful story.
9. The Faith
Because I still can't decide what I think it's about. Most likely death, but pretty open, and whom is being addressed. "Love?" directly? Like Love Itself? Or is Love a petname for something else? And the melody is really nice and sounds like nighttime. And it was while listening to this that I got an image in my head of the owl-like eyes that some moth wings have. I know it's pretty removed, but I've been looking for a poem where I could use that image, but the rest of it hasn't come to me yet. It's become part of my daily thought process.
10. Please Don't Pass me By
Are there any other recordings of this than the live version? What I see in my head is that the whole crowd is having this religious experience while under the influence of Our Man. He said, "You're gonna get down on your knees," about 42 times, as though he was telling the crowd to do it, do it, do it! And I wonder if they did. Was anyone there at that performance? Would I have gotten down on my knees?
11. Let's Sing Another Song Boys
He pronounces the w in grown. This one has groWn old and bitter.
12. That Don't Make it Junk
Because it's funny, but he sings it so straight.
13. Teachers
Because it's kind of creepy. Child, you are a bone. Yeek.
14. The Traitor
15. I'm Your Man
Because it feeds the fantasy.
16. 1000 Kisses Deep
The song and the unsung. Oh, just because its' good.

(Not in the aforementioned order...)
17. Hallelujia
18. Anthem
19. Story of Isaac
20. If it be Your Will
Because these ones are especially special. They almost get me to believe too. I want to, I just can't seem to convince myself that the universe requires an organizing force with a consciousness. Love. Gravity. Same thing. G-d? I just don't know if love and gravity have their own consciousness. If they do, I reckon that's what G-d is, but does the universe need that in order to exist? Well, this is where I am. Searching, struggling, reading, writing, and doing Science in my tiny attempt to understand how things work.

I have 95 LC songs on my Pod, and I wish I could list them all here. I know I've left out good ones.

Oh, Manna, blather blather.

Thanks for giving all your reasons, Manna 8) ~ It makes your list SOooo much more interesting :D . It's so darn hard to choose, isn't it?

I see Jimbo came up with his own, serious list.

10 songs

Post by Casey »

OK this is my first post on here after occasional lurking for a number of years. I've been listening to LC since probably '94 or so after hearing Waiting for the Miracle in NBK. I never watched the movie again but I never stopped listening to LC.
Of course my top songs change all the time but for now I'd say:

1. Field Commander Cohen
This song is epic...Fidel Castro...Fields and Castles...wonderful
2. Anthem
Several songs on The Future have a lasting quality for me...this is the best one.
3. Dance me to the end of love
I'm not so big on the sound of the album version, but certainly top 10 material.
4. You know who I am
I first discovered what a great song this was on Live Songs. Never had been struck by the studio version.
5. Story of Isaac
This one is timeless (well most are) - so poignant and what imagery
6. Famous Blue Raincoat
Of course
7. Suzanne
Heard covers of this one long before I ever heard LC's. I have since forgotten the covers though in favor of the real thing.
8. Hallelujah
It's a given.
9. Avalanche
I'll have this one figured out one of these years.
10. Joan of Arc
Another perfect melding of the story and his story

this one goes to 11:
11. Dress Rehearsal Rag
Maybe it's just the passion in his voice on this one.

So although my list is biased toward a certain few albums, it does not mean I don't like all of his others (e.g. Ladies' Man). I just like those songs a little more.

Haha I have hardly heard song from any other albums that I own (I have seen quite a few live performances, but I am still trying to buy the albums !)

Which are the first 5 (counting Live Songs of course) and Various Positions. Which I am gonna take a list of my 10 favorite songs SO FAR

Here is a list of the songs by themselves without an explnation in no order at all... THEN I will place them in an order with an explanation (from what I think I will be able to do, because sometimes I don't know why, I just love it :!: )

-Suzanne
-Stories of the Street
-Bird on the Wire
-Tonight Will Be Fine
-Famous Blue Raincoat
-Please Don't Pass Me By
-Lover Lover Lover
-A Singer Must Die
-Who by Fire
-Dance Me to the End of Love

I feel horrible, I have run out of space on my list for my favorite songs

---------------------------------------------

1 ) A Singer Must Die
Simply because I can relate to this song, he sings from a stand point anyone can take, someone being judged, everyone is being judged. By someone who either admits it or now, someone who KNOWS it or not. And everytime I listen to this song I learn something new about my own life, I simply love it.

2 ) Suzanne
Firstly, its a song that I have adored from the first listen, and how it's a
love song that is not with those (and yes I am quoting something which I do not remember) "I want you, I need you, I love you" basis. It is also also the favorite song of the only other person that I know of who listens to LC's music.

3 ) Dance Me to the End of Love
It's magic, sometimes that's all that is needed, and Leonard put it into words...

4 ) Tonight Will Be Fine
The reason I love this song is because whenever anything doesn't work out completely I just give this song a quick listen and everything does go just great, even if it is only... for a while! I actually can't listen to this song without smiling :)

5 ) Who by Fire
For a song about death, it is actually comforting in a way, a kind of knowledge that no one really has access to, often not even wanting to... know why someone has passed on. It has a kind of nameless prediction that really appeals to me.

6 ) Please Don't Pass Me By
He should of recorded it, I've heard at least 2 hours worth of this song, and I just can never bring myself to skip it, simply because it tells me something I can't even indentify past the direct lyrics, for me, it's one of those unexplainable songs of beauty.

7 ) Famous Blue Raincoat
I listen to this song as a story which has no beginning middle or end, but just a summary with what could be a resolution/ "I guess that I miss you I guess I forgive you, I'm glad you stood in my way" / A kind of involentary understanding and acceptance of a situation, tickles the spine when I hear it.

8 ) Bird on the Wire
"If I've been unkind, I hope you can just let it go on by, if I have been untrue, I hope you know, it was never to you" I really relate to that, it's a lot like a misinterpretation, unwanted messages or angryness or sadness being passed on. And a confession like that seems to make it all better, if not to the other person, then to the one who has caused it, a sort of self appreciation is gained.

9 ) Lover Lover Lover
What is said to be a song for the soldiers on both sides of the Yom Kippur war is also a song of self analysis, a song in which someone wants to change by "starting again", but realizes that it is not possible to accept everything that was done was done for a reason... I don't know if I am alone in this analysis, but this to me is sometimes a song of "no regrets".

10 ) Stories of the Street
This is one for "everyone" someone can interpret what they wish from this one, if someone could give me an opinion as to what they make of this song that would be marvelous, I am trying to see what diffrent opinions of this song someone may have, I really enjoy listening to it, I love and understand some of the the metaphores, but this one, for me, is very powerful :!:

---------------------------------------------

This list is gonna change every month or so for me, I grow to love each song over again after some time...*

I started writing this post at 12:50 AM finished at 2 AM, and I am positive that most of the songs on this list are not actually my favorites just songs that I really enjoy, which are all of them  **

I hope this isn't too much for a list of "best songs"  :D ***

Great lists and Great commentary ~ your reasons make all the difference to your lists ~ Casey and Andrei!!! That's not to say that I wouldn't have understood your choices, otherwise; just that your reasons are what let the light shine in a bit on you 8) !! It's always a dilemma to try to 'choose' when it comes to Leonard's songs... yet, I love reading the choices that come with reasons, as each time, as I read the song replays in my mind. Reading through mere lists, the list goes too fast and there's nothing to stop me for contemplation, as your reasons do both immediately and gently. Thanks for taking the time...

Welcome to the Forum, Casey :D ... I love it when someone emerges from the Lurker Hallway!!
