. . . here is a musician whose seamless move towards avant-garde musical theatre

Not sure why I'm isolating out just this. I guess because it reminds me of some of the few songs I've heard Waits sing and really, really liked! In fact, from the ones I've heard, I agree with your whole assessment here, Jim. Waits is someone I'd like very much to hear more. Would love to see him perform in person 8) !

A touchy subject for me. In November 2004 he was set to play in the U.K. for the first time in 17 years (and in front of me for the 1st time!). This was my moment, or so I thought. I spent 3 hours on the phone trying to get a ticket. No joy.

Well, then, I see you concur... albeit through gritted teeth.

Since then? How often does he appear anywhere? More in Europe than the U.S.? [Likely  ]

I'm sorry to hear of your extremely disappointing non-attendance. I thought the punchline was going to be that he failed to appear. In reality, it was you.

I for one love Tom's new record. The middle disc in particular, "Bawlers" is easily accessible and has some great songs. The other two are a bit more challenging and take a bit more work, but well worth it. I didn't get around to posting on "best album of 2006" but this one gets my vote.

Rob,

This thread is actually 2 and a half years old :P and only the last few posts were recently made... they were talking about the album Real Gone. Not his newest release.

Not quite correct. The thread may have started over 2 years ago but as happens often here, it has been revived and added to. The subject of Tom Waits is just as relevant today and there is no problem in discussing his current album, Orphans, which is excellent :D

Hi margaret,

Haha, just what I was pointing out is that they didn't particularly like Real Gone and Rob liked the even newer one, not talking about the 2004 album.

Every day is Tom Waits day.

Be it the middle CD, as Rob says, or my all-time favourite, Blood Money. I'm still amazed by "I fell into the ocean" line.

O.K. fair enough.....my attention must have wandered a wee bit. It is a relief to know that no one was slagging off "Orphans".

I was always charmed by his dark, "smoky smell", noisy atmosphere;and he can be pure, sharp and sensitive at the same time. And of course, I loved "Orphans"!

I used to love Heart Attack and Vine, Nighthawks at the Diner, Foreign Affairs etc, Jersey Girl is one of the best songs I know

I followed him as far as the Frank's Wild Years era and then lost interest I'm afraid, he seemed to become a bit of a parody of himself, I daresay I missed out on a lot but life is short and you can't listen to everything
...that David played and it pleased the Lord...

Secret, I'd be happy to send you (via yousendit.com or megaupload, say) copies of Mule Variations and/or the extraordinary Alice. Our old friend Frank is nowhere to be seen on these particular musical landscapes.

Incidentally, I'm happy to burn copies of Waits's ultra-rare, long-deleted concert movie Big Time for any U.K.-based posters here. If you're happy to send me a blank DVD and a self-adressed/stamped/padded envelope I'll add this little gem to your collection.

Does anybody have the ORIGINAL tapes of Alice and Blood Money (then still titled Woyczek), from the actual production for theatre? I know they were available on bootleg CDs years before 2002 albums; Alice was titled "Alice the Original Demos" or "Alice PBS" (I think).
