mIRC - alternative route to the chatroom!

Post by jarkko »

According to some messages on this forum a few of you have
problems in entering the chatroom with the direct link posted on
the front page of http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com. The most
probable explanation is that your computer does not handle
javascript pages - you may have disabled javascript.

However there is still the alternative way to go to the chat. Before
the new software we used the traditional mIRC software, and it
still can be used!

If you don't have the mIRC program, go to the mIRC homesite
at http://www.mirc.co.uk/ and download the software for free.

After the download has finished, completre the installation by clicking
on the mirc symbol.

When you are ready to use it, just click on the mIRC logo to open
the program. You have to make the following choices:

 Server: irc.nebula.fi
 Channel: #CohenFans

This can be done in the following way:
- open your mIRC program, delete the "About mIRC" box
- at mIRC Options, find the "IRC Network" Box. Click on ADD
- in the small box that will be opened, find the following lines:
---"Description" - write "Leonard Cohen Chatroom"
---"IRC server" - write "irc.nebula.fi"
then click on "Add" (no need for "password!")

You will now be back in "mIRC Options" Box. Fill in your name,
nickname, and email address.
Then click "OK", and mIRC opens its "Status" box for you. Click on the
"Connect" symbol -- the flash button, first from the left. mIRC
now connects you with our server (irc.nebula.fi) and in the "mIRC
Channels Folder" it asks you to enter the name of the channel you want
to join. Write #CohenFans and click OK (you may also ADD it)

After some seconds you should be in the chatroom!!!

I hope this helps!

Thanks for your step-by-step instructions, Jarkko. When I return this afternoon, I will try it. Here's hoping....ahh...the winner/loser may be soon at hand, Pete. At this point, I'm not attached to the status of the outcome, only the outcome itself! Geez, I hope I see you there ~ or you me.

Jarkko
You are being very patient with us.
I have already tried mIRC without success but that was without knowing the step by step instructions which you have provided.
I will try it later this evening when I have a liitle more time and patience .
Fingers crossed.

Best of luck pete. i can get in the normal way fortunately. i have tried mIRC though, and got nowhere until i was talked through online by someone who knew what they were doing. once downloaded it is impossible to know where to start. no instructions. i get the impression it was witten with 'experts' in mind, not novices. needless to say i don't use it anymore. i hope it works for you, it will be good to have you back, but you have my deepest sympathy for having to get in that way.

Tried this route this evening and no joy.
Followed Jakko's instructions but it fails when trying to connect to irc.nebula.fi server.
It says' unable to connect..cannot find server' .

When I try to get into the chatroom through leonardcohenfiles it says I must download java virtual machine and when I try it says I can't have it because I have windows XP.

I have been to java web site and the java virtual machine has suddenly become unavailable.

Anyone out there able to shed any light on any of this?

You get used to an empty room.
