"I'm Your Man"-currently on Sundance Channel

Post by Joe Way »

I returned home tonight after "Jazz at Five" and turned on the TV to catch the score of the Brewer's game and the channel had turned to Sundance with Rufus Wainwright singing "Chelsea Hotel." I soon realized that the "Leonard Cohen" preference that I had programmed into my Tivo unit had finally worked. It is on in the background right now-so for those in the U. S.-I am sure that it will be repeated a few times.

Hi, Joe, yes, I have been watching it on the Sundance Ch. tonight at 11. pm too, was beautiful!
I was not that much impressed with Rufus though.
I don't know what the critiques have been saying about this documentary, but I really enjoyed it very much. They will be repeating it at 4.am this morning , I guess I will not be waiting for that, but hopefully it will be on again tomorrow, may be onDemand channel, if not on Sundance.
Leonard looked so noble, like a real patrician. The last song- '' I' am your man'' gave an overwhelming emotion. He really is the man!

Hi Bee,
It is great to see you here again! Yes, it was repeated late last night-I could not stay up that late also. It is going to be repeated on the Sundance Channel on September 7th at 1:30 PM (Central Time). The critical response was mixed-some liked it very much and others were put off by some of the cinematic stylings among other reasons. I find myself absolutely incapable of being objective about it as it conjures up so many wonderful memories of the Brooklyn Tribute concert that we attended. We also saw it for the first time in an almost empty theater with my mother and my youngest daughter and now those pleasant memories will always be intertwined when I watch it. I could watch it at least two times in succession, I like it so much.

Hi Jimbo,

I think that there is only one Chelsea Hotel in New York so you were probably there.

Hi Jimbo ~

Were there tons of artwork everywhere in the relatively small lobby... particularly, in scale with the artwork? If you go from the main page to the link for the New York Event 2004, you'll be able to see photos from the Chelsea [both inside and out] and you'll know for sure.

Hi Joe ~

That's way too much intertwining to hope for objectivity at this point :D .

The price of the hotel room sounds right, but I don't recall their having Continental breakfast available. It could be that we just opted out on that, though; and that, this much later, I've just forgotten. Check the photos to confirm it's the same place [which, given Joe's comment, it seems it probably is, but you never know... duplicity to capitalize on the reputation of the name seems not too unlikely in a place the size of N.Y.C.].

Dear Lizzy and Joe, thank you very much for warm welcome, was nice reading you too!
Yes, I think it is a general rule- it's always easier to criticize than to create something.

I didn't mind the artsy sort of try with the lights etc.
That documentary was not a documentary of a man's life and work in a strict documentary, research style, but more as a tribute to a poet and artist, could be many versions and styles, however if someone wanted it to be in a drier and more academic style, surely they should go on trying to do it themselves.

There were many very deeply heartfelt emotional presentations of Leonard's songs, some gave me goose pumps and tears- to realize how hungry people are for a true art of poetry and music, not in a level of entertainment, but on much greater cultural scale.

Also, it was understood, that each one of the performers were more as participants of some almost religious ritual to god of arts- Apollo, there was sense of sanctity, uniting the performers and the audience.

But of course, the most important moments of the film were the opportunity to listen to the master himself, his thoughts and his wording of them.
I am having the feeling, that Leonard has become a teacher to us all, in a deep sense of a teacher to ones soul. I don't think there have been many artists capable of such a role in ones life.

Yes, Lizzy, thank you, I am well and all is well.
Joe, thanks for the info on the next showing of IYM.

Hi Bee ~

Great thoughts, well expressed. I couldn't agree more. It's all so much more and deeper than " . . . the popular song."

Love,
Lizzy
