Avatar. Isn't that a goofy word? What it used to mean was when a divine being came to Earth and took bodily form, that form was the avatar. Ha ha ha. Kind of like the word icon, which had a different meaning before computers came around. I wonder why we keep using these words that used to describe sacred things for computer images.

Anyhurr, even the Queen of Tangents can get to the point...

What you need to do in a nutshell is find a picture that conforms to this site's parameters for an avatar, which I think are 80 x 80 pixels. Then you need to host your image in someimage hosting site. Once you have the URL, you can copy and paste that into the place under you profilei here that says, "edit avatar." If you need more detailed instructions, I can help.

Hello Maria,

To change your avatar:
- click on "user control panel" (left upper corner)
- go to "profile"
- on the left side, choose "edit avatar"

You can use any picture from your pc as long as it fits the rules:
Maximum dimensions; width 80 pixels, height 80 pixels, file size 6kB.

If you've got a picture which is bigger than allowed, you can always send it to me and I'll make it smaller for you...

Hi Maarten,

I don't mean to jump the queue but can you please tell me how to reduce the file size of a photo? What softwear or programme do I need to reduce the size?

Hello,

Photoshop is one way to do it, but if you are not familiar with it, it's a little bit tricky... And it's expensive to buy just for this purpose...
Another way to minimize a picture is using a small program which is standard included with windows xp, vista...: PAINT. You can find it by clicking the "start" button, then go to "all programs" and look for the folder "bureau accessoires".

If you open your photo there, open the menu "Image" (or something like that, I've got a Dutch version, it's the 4th word on top) and go to "edit size"... (see below)

Another way is downloading a small program called "Photo resize", put it on your desktop and just drag and drop images there to resize them. It has many possibilities, but is easy to use (there's a good manual online)
Check it out: http://www.rw-designer.com/picture-resize

If you need any help....

Greetings,
Maarten

Hello !
Thanks Maarten for your information. The words "User Contorl Paner" was the solution of my trouble. I seemed blind...
And now, I'll seem a begging...
The size of 6kb in a picture doesn't extist in my photo box, they must be too small  So, I've tryed to do your instructions with the Paint, but....(I don't know the reason (maybe the nature  )) I can't do it, getting the images smaller are imposible for me
This message seems a petition, and surely it has got a lot of things of that, I know....
But I'm not worried for my problem with the pictures and the computer; I'm happy for your welcome to me :)
Thanks
Maria

Happy 30 Years Birthday, Maarten :D !! It wasn't easy finding a thread that's half-way appropriate for wishing you this! So many of yours are in the News section.

Glad you're here to share your 30th with us. It was a pleasure seeing you in Berlin. Any special plans for your day?

The instructions that you give seem to include some unneeded complications. Do you go through all that to post your avatar?
