Dear Mr. Cohen,
I wish that the 70th turn around the sun finds you with one more wrinkle in the forehead but with one less in the heart.
Happy birthday!

Dear Leonard
For your 70th birthday, Lucretia and I wish you a most healthy, happy and satisfying day. The joy of life and the tribulations which lead to that joy are evident to all who listen and read. We await your new efforts (music or words) with eager anticipation.
Leonard. We hope you come to the west coast of Canada soon. When (not if) you are in Victoria, British Columbia, we invite you to stay with us. The house is on the straits facing Mt Baker (waking up to the ocean is supreme) and on a clear day one can see the snow cap in all its splendour.
Happy Birthday, Mr. Cohen. Keep on.
With love
Jerry Tenenbaum (Toronto and Victoria)
Lucretia van den Berg (Victoria)

Dear Leonard,
I wish you a wonderful, enjoyable, poetic birthday. You inspired my first book, and made me want to learn how to play the guitar and set my words to music.
I can't tell you how much your life has meant to mine.
Happy 70th!
Always adoring,
Natalie Fuhr

Tuesday ~ Very Early Afternoon
Oh, my dear Leonard ~
I'm feeling distracted because today is your day. I keep returning here to read the accumulating messages. I want to shout from the mountain, "
Today, Leonard is 70!" I can't help but wonder what
you are thinking and feeling, and how you are spending your day. I suspect the dogs didn't note any difference

.
When I wrote my serious, earlier message, hurricanes blew winds that brought the sanctity and fragility of life to the fore. Violence that plagues the world continues to do the same. My words still fall short, and they don't feel much lighter. I know you understand. However, in this vast array of delightful greetings to you

, I find relief

and pleasure

.
These many years, you have walked lightly upon the earth, and your impact with those you've encountered, and who have encountered you, has been immense and profound. Some of those appear here, in all degrees of knowing ~ from personally and well, to never met ~ yet we share in being deeply influenced by your work and your being. No one, personally unknown to me, has been so prominent in my life.
May today bring you both moments of solitude and joy, and may sorrow pass you by. As you stand, elegant and humble, at the heart of this world-wide outpouring of love, may you recognize and internalize its truth; and know that for all those who have written, there are thousands more who haven't, for whom we also speak.
You are precious in this world, Leonard Cohen. You've been there for us. May you consider this, in some way of significance, our being there for you.
I celebrate you.
All my love,
Elizabeth

Dear Mr. Cohen,
It was actually all quite good
there's a reason why we should
remember you
Today, in all the Great Concert Halls, we erase the lesser names of Wagner and Mozart, and in their place, in shining gold paint, we inscribe the name...
So put your birthday hat on you venerable concussion, and dance, dance, dance.
Yours,
Zachary Oberzan
