Hi Yorkshire Lad,

Was around for this classic's release too. Hadn't heard it in years. It's a fun, summery song. :)

Hi Steven,

Thanks for that and as Maurice Chevalier says " I remember it well". I've only seen Jonathan Richman once in concert. He played a solo gig at The Irving Plaza in Manhattan in the early 1980's. A great evening.

All the best,
Merton

Sky Blue and Black, by Jackson Browne, is a perfect description of this summer, here at least, as it is (nicely) stormy at times, and more black skies to come according to the forecast I just saw. Or at least that is a good enough excuse to post it as it's a lovely song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAu7gh7xoJo

Hi Merton,

The two Jonathan Richman concerts I saw were in the early 1980's and also in Manhattan. They were in
Greenwich Village.

Hi Diane,

A song that needs no excuse for posting about in any Season. :)

Hi Eskimo,

I especially enjoy the Billy Stewart cover. The first 40 seconds of the Stewart cover sound to
me like a "nigun." Wouldn't expect that kind of a sound as a start-off for this sort of song,
though it works well here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigun

I haven't checked all the links but I think this one hasn't been posted. It has the title of the thread and says it all :)

Summertime
written by Leonard Cohen and Sharon Robinson for Diana Ross

.....mind you, it's the middle of winter over here. Average daytime temperature where I am is 23 degrees celsius - that's above not below!
May as well be summer for most of you

EDIT: I forgot about this. Here's Sharon and Javier Mas with same above song at Helsinki 2008 -

Looking forward to getting to the additional links. The link that John posted is blocked in the U.S.A., unfortunately.
