Read this thread quickly and didn't realise at first that it was meant to be a poem.
It is customary to acknowledge the original when you are plagiarising (or paraphrasing).
Being from Montreal I lean toward assuming that everyone is familiar with Brel. And I didn't think for a moment that I was plagiarising nor do i now. And if I can be so bold I will mention that I personally like my version more than Brel's or Walkers.

Your mention of Patsy Stone reminded me how much I liked Elly Stone singing Brel. Especially the song "My Childhood" which was Brel's wife's favorite.

Oh, and I was going to thank BM for posting the video, as I hadn't seen it. I'm only just discovering Brel, myself. YouTube is a big help, as I don't speak French. I just quickly read Jack's post and 'assumed'. Quite the video, I have to admit.

Hi Linda ~

Lightning from here is responsible for a lot of sub-titled interpretations of Brel's lyrics on YouTube. If you go to the Other Music section [if you haven't pursued them already from there], you'll be able to connect to a number of wonderful ones she's done wonderfully. [Yes. That was fun to say ;-) .]

Ha! I get a lot of pleasure out of saying things like that - but don't do it too often, or people will think you can't speak English. ;) I'll def. check out Lightning's translations. I remember she had started that a year or two ago. Glad he's found his way into this forum. Too bad he's very dead though. At least he'll qualify for the R&R Hall of Fame. :o But the burning question is: is he 'R&R'?????

I'll tell you exactly what I love about that comment. I thought of you when I did it... somewhere else here, too, with another. I'll point it out when it comes around. Both done in the same general time frame, i.e. same session at the computer. I almost mentioned you, in fact, to the effect of, "I've been feeling a lot like you, lately, Linda," after I said it... but finally opted to not bring you up relative to it. My bad  .

 Jack, can't argue with that.

Lizzy, it was lightning that put me onto Brel. Before that I only knew the English versions and it is interesting to see what they lose in translation. He is also such an expressive performer (which that clip really shows).

Oh, and you may note that I have busted out. ;-)

I have always liked the Scott Walker one. Jacques Brel is very flamboyant isn't he!
