danny thompson was a great bass player, he played in the first nick drake album too. In happy sad I love carter collins' congas instead :D

Hi Thin Gipsy Thief and Dharma,

You can count me in on the Tim Buckley appreciation society, as I have most of his stuff. However, I don't particularly like it all, and find some of it quite challenging. I like the overall sound on "Blue Afternoon" but find it rather tuneless. I too would say that "Happy Sad" is my favourite Buckley album. My very favourite two songs of his however are "Morning Glory" and "Wings".

(TGT) Have you noticed that "Wings" is the prototype for much of Nick Drake's work - especially "Thoughts of Mary Jane" ( it is well known that Drake listened to Tim Buckley. By the way, I think all of Nick Drake's work is totally sublime.

All good things, John E

I sometimes find Tim Buckley challenging too, especially the late works (such as "Look at the fool")..but Goodbye & Hello, Happy Sad and Blue Afternoon (strictly in order of "vocal innovation" ;-) ) are masterpieces (the others are great albums however)..I really love "Dream Letter" and "Cafe".

About Nick Drake, I too think Wings had some influence on the dreamful mood of Thoughts of Mary Jane. Besides this case, I find his voice totally different from Tim's, he was able to deeply touch you without any sort of emphasis or "intonation" in the singing.."Fruit Free" is an astounding example. :!:
