It is a remarkable and stunning piece of work. It carries all the hallmarks of Palmer's work, and some of the additional footage just about brought me to tears. To see it in such clarity in its restored form, after 'making do' with poor bootleg versions all these years, is truly thrilling. Not only does it give a glimpse into the life of the touring musician and provides an insight into the complex character of the man himself, it captures the ethos of the era very effectively and brings back many memories of the time for me.
Two particular sections of the additional footage in the film struck me very deeply - the images accompanying 'Story of Isaac' (shocking) and the extensive home video of the Cohens and pics of Marianne at the end of the film, whilst Leonard sings 'So Long, Marianne' - very moving.
The packaging is first rate and exceptional, and I am proud to have been able to contribute to the project in a small way.
I'm sure this will be a significant event in the Krakow meetup.

Dave

Really looking foward to this film.
btw, does the dvd come with english subtitle?

WiTS,
Yes, it has choice of English or French subtitles.
....and it really is worth waiting for...

No, it isn't a gesture - it's another microphone and stand.
The poster is a 'still' taken from the Tel Aviv concert, near the beginning of the film.

Wow, I only just saw the US release will be 31st August already. Hurray. :D
Does anyone know if it will be released in the PAL format too? I can't watch NTSC region coded DVDs on my player

Puddingdale,
I was having the same problem playing DVDs on a more expensive player. My brother then gave me a cheap one that he no longer needed. It was purchased in the States at a Target (like WalMart?) store for under $40. This Phillips DVD said on the box that it 'Simply Plays it All' and so it does. You might keep an eye out for something like this if all else fails.
Best regards,
Mary

Thank you, Mary B. I was thinking about that too. Best would be a DVD player that plays everything, including videos and Blu-ray discs :) But what a waste just because of unnecessary codes and the like. Well, if all else fails, sooner or later, I will probably "surrender."

I am going to try and meet Vicomtesse (she will be in Chichester at the time) and get to the Chichester Film Festival to see the film on the big screen.

Bird on a Wire on Wednesday 25 Aug 18:15
I guess it all started for me sometime around Christmas 1967 and now, goodness me, it's.........2018 and over fifty years later.
No one ever listens to me. I might as well be a Leonard Cohen record.

Hi Arlene,

thank you for posting the introduction to the premiere of BIRD ON A WIRE.

Hope you enjoyed the concert in Gothenburg and that the weather will be fine tomorrow in Berlin.

....walking round liverpool tate's brilliant 'Picasso - Peace and Freedom' exhibition this afternoon and as the exhibition's title suggests there were dozens of versions of Picasso's dove of peace on the walls.......amongst them was the original that tony palmer has on the cover of his 'bird on a wire' dvd........strangely there where no 'bird on a wire' dvds on sale to accompany the drawing....ta ken

I have been sleeping on this design since the mid 1970s. Picasso licensed his bird, as well as Don Quixote riding his horse, to a bed sheet manufacturer. It does look so pure and beautiful on the white DVD cover.

...according to the exhibtion catalouge picasso just like his father before him kept a large collection of doves and fan-tailed pigeons and when he was painting/drawing he never differentiated between the two but just called them all doves...this particular drawing is actually a fan-tailed pigeon....once again according to the catalogue it was never picasso's idea to turn his dove/pigeon drawings and paintings into 20th. century symbols of peace...it was actually the idea of the communist poet louis aragon who came to pablo's studio looking for a logo for the 1949 paris peace conference...when louis chose one of pablo's dove/pigeon drawings pablo retorted........

"i never understand how one could make it into a symbol of peace. It is an extremely cruel bird...

and also let's not forget that unlike doves pigeons make lovely pies......ta ken
