Now, I listened. This is beautiful, I can not say exactly which CD is beautiful for me, because every CD is something unique.

Like so many of Leonard's songs, Joan of Arc goes way beyond the obvious theme. This song speaks to me of so much more than the historical Joan of Arc. It speaks of a love so deep and precious that it burns the lovers past the point of no return, to a timeless state of being....a passion that is all consuming. There is still another layer that I am unable to express in words, it is only felt deep within the soul. An excellent choice for sure.

At the moment I have fallen for the Ballad of the Absent Mare, which I am trying to learn on guitar. I know it off by heart now, and Leonard writes so well about loss - whether it is animal or human, the sense of desolation is captured :

"But the river's in flood and the roads are awash,
And the bridges break up in the panic of loss".

"And the crickets are breaking his heart with their song
As the day caves in and the night is all wrong."

I read in Ira Nadel's biography that in Provence in 1970 Leonard and his Army rode on stage on their horses, Leonard on a white horse - now that must have been a memorable sight fot the lucky audience !

As of this very moment, I have to say my favorite LC song/poem is the recitation of 1000 Kisses Deep. It just touches something inside me like nothing else has ever done before.

I'm more of the type that has to vary songs a lot - I cant really listen to the same piece over and over again. I have a general tendency to get bored quickly... but what's my current favorite? Well, always up there is the classic "First we take Manhattan" as its solidly stuck in my mind  . Ive been listening to Dear Heather a lot lately though so my current pick may be Morning Glory or Nightingale...

8WeTakeBerlin-

You are not alone. In this thread, many of us will come back to post a 'new' favorite. Even if you've heard the song many times, somewhere along the line a particular song will all of sudden 'speak' to you and it becomes the favorite, however fleeting.

Welcome to the forum! Hope to see you here often.

Best regards,
Mary

I'm coming late to this.. so hard for me to choose a favorite. But reading the thread I see that many people seem to have the same experience as I do: to listen repeatedly to one song for a while, and then find another that suddenly speaks to you for the first time, or for the first time in a long time, and then another....
I keep coming back to the Field Commander Cohen album, so many incredible performances on that album: and right now it's The Smokey Life which has hold of me.

Sue7 , I agree with you about Field Commander Cohen; if I could have only one LC album this would be it. I love every track, but especially "The Window" ; the best ever version of it is here. Same goes for "Memories" - this version of it is so full of life and fun, the perfect one to play for someone who thinks of Leonard Cohen as "gloomy" !

TipperaryAnn, I agree with you about "Memories": that song always makes me smile. (I also love the video version in a German TV studio: the whole feeling of that event is celebrattory, and Jennifer Warnes and Sharon Robinson's dancing is wonderful. )
And then yesterday going home, that recording of "Gypsy Wife" suddenly got to me: so so beautiful.

Right this moment my favorite Leonard Cohen song is "Feels So Good." I listened to it several times today, and wrote the lyrics down for an article on Suite101. Here is the link:

(Generally my favorite is "Heart With No Companion.")
