Tom you are expressing a very commun idea of our time: the social action can not do anything anymore, we can not do anything anymore, so I will find the peace of mind, and I will leave happy forever.
In the 60 there was a religion of the left, may I say. People where beleiving that politic and social engagment was the way, no of few thinking about psychological side of human beings.
In the 70 it was the Inner Self. Every social cause was regarding like a personnal problem projected on the society. (outch! but true)
In the 80 : No Future. That was reinfocing the individualism.
I hope that our after 2000 years will see be more harmonious. I just have hope. No Sir. No evidence Sir.

Tom if you are happy with this : so far so good.
Cohen and Dylan also seen that all a generation was going in a dead end by turning to pop music as a new sort of religion. Only Dylan suffered in silence to be the sacrificed prophet of people that were weird in regard to his personnal values - while Cohen, my dear Mr. Cohen so dear to me because he is direct, and is telling things like they are told it long ago and all way long.
Now what? The crack with the past that we experienced with the speed up rythm of life by Technology&Science the emptiness of No Future or let say - for the optimists like me - Not So Certain Future, let us with present time as sole important time for an individual and a void of identity. Narcissim Freud - Old or Young - is calling it. "I have to live for myself" : others in this scheme are reduced to a mirror which the sole purpose is to send back an image of the self.
Often, people are searching the company or proximity of another one for the charisma he has, or the celebrety or whatever he/she does not have in order to benefit of the glow.
I just ask. Can we be more creative? Having experienced both poles of behaviours, can we make the balance between the social and personal problems we are encountered?
On this, I'm going to have an ice cream. It is snowing here, outside, but I am inside.
Cheers!
