what's the meaning of life ?

Debate on Leonard Cohen's poetry (and novels), both published and unpublished. Song lyrics may also be discussed here.

From his song 'Beautiful Boy':

"Life is what happens to you
While you're busy making other plans"

it's on his 'Double Fantasy' album, as well as the 'Legend' compilation, as I now know - I used to regularly quote a variation on these lines, saying I thought John Lennon had used them, but I was never sure what the quote was, or when he said it... but here it is, and I just listened to the song to be sure.

Thanks for that final clarification, Tim. I love that whole album. 'Beautiful Boy' is particularly magical.

It is very true that statement...
"The point of life is to become comfortable with death."
to arrive at that moment with no fear, no regrets....
necessary then to think sometimes about death.

and the other one:Life is what happens to you while you are busy making plans for it" ? very true indeed.
No use to plan when life is sometimes written for us
In my experience I have had the best moments without looking for them...they have just come

That's what's ironic, Kush. We all had it slightly wrong, until Tim came with the real deal 8) .

Maybe we should have a whip round and send all the Americans on an Irony 101 course. Alanis Morisette has a lot of apologising to do.

What's an irony 101 course?
Anything to do with Room 101?
Why slag the Americans?
Or is it your childish way of attacking Liz again?
Perplexed...............Georges

Good grief you really are being dim today George(s) Baby. 101 is a normal number assigned to introductory courses in the US (e.g. History101), it has nothing to do with Orwell's Room101. Most Americans seem to have a real problem grasping what irony is, as Tysh Darling just so graciously demonstrated. What i always find funny about that is American sitcoms are often packed with ironic lines which they completely understand. I was trying not to pick Tysh Darling out for special treatment as you have asked before, however as you do not appreciate the effort i suppose i will have to return to business as usual. She does not understand much about the English Language at all, so this is no surprise to me. I could have used this example to make that point again. I did not need to as you did it for me.
Many thanks,

No use to plan when life is sometimes written for us.
Hi Sandra,
I think about death all of the time. Not just physical death, but spiritual deaths as well. I'm very aware of the temporary nature of
everything.
Recently I heard a story of a man who was breaking into some building-
trying to come into a kitchen through the vent on a commercial stove.
He had a 42" waist and the vent was only a couple feet wide.
He became quite stuck for a long time. The fire department had to use the "Jaws of Life" to free him.

I was thinking to myself that if that had been me (I'm not quite that stupid) that I might seriously lose it, freak out and just start screaming.
But then I remembered that eventually the kitchen would open I would
be discovered. And yes, I would go to jail, but I wouldn't be dead.
Though the experience of being trapped in a kitchen vent would be.

Rambling,
Joe[/u]

Hmmm.......perhaps irony was the wrong word? I found it [ironic] that each of us, in thinking with certainty that we were bringing the correct version, were, in fact, bringing still another wrong version, as in "Here ~ I have the right answer!" Then, with great aplomb  [or whatever] give a [still another] wrong answer. One definition in Webster's for irony: "an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected." Hmmmm........perhaps one more literate than I can point me to the error of my ways. You appear to think that would be you, Partisan.

Or, perhaps, I could get out my red pencil and begin circling some of your egregious errors, such as "its" vs. "it's" ~ or "whose" vs. "who's" ~ etc. that I see from time to time, but somehow manage to resist bringing to your attention. Perhaps that's the compassionate American in me.

Ewe must be imagining tho'se. I am generally very good with my apostophes, and as for using completely the wrong word i am not aware of it, but it may happen when i am tired.

Yes, just as you must have been imagining that irony was the wrong word for me to have used 8) .

I presume  you're also aware that the left hand of your banana figure is saying to all who read your postings, "I love you," in American Sign Language. Lovely that you have bound yourself so closely with an American means of expression. You also might want to try getting more rest, as your errors are more numerous than you might imagine.

How could one not consider the word of the day in all contexts? Or one might consider that it constitutes your answer to the question of what is the meaning of life. "Neither bananas nor love," as though you had to tell us. After all, even some of the most "hidden" realities manage to show.
