Maybe some of our Lisbon friends can post a photograph (or a link) of the venue? What else in addition to the information that “the Passeio Maritímo de Algês is a big open space near Tejo River” can be said? Is it somewhat like an arena? I’m just curious. Guess I’ll manage to spend some sunny days in Lisbon … ;-)

Hi Polarfox..Im wondering if your name is also indicative of the place you are from??....Ive purchased my ticket and received online confirmation...and am just thinking through the realities!...In July where I live, down here it is winter time...there is often a mass exodus from the town (and NZ in general to the tropics or Europe)...Now its my turn.!!...I will miss all those frosty mornings sliding on the ice in the car....the occasional overnight snowfalls right down to the water, and when I get back the first of the spring growth will be appearing....Portugal looks wonderful in July, warm but not too hot, and such a lovely place.. Im like you, some more information would be good, although I did a google search and found quite a lot about the venue, looks good. Im sure the concert will be great, but so will the time in Portugal, before and after the concert. :D

Hi NewZealender
That is a long travel for a concert! I reckon I'd consider to do it myself if Leonard would tour the south hemisphere only, but was not expecting to see someone from NZ coming over to Portugal. It's good to find I'm not the only one who's healthily insane. WELCOME! I believe you'll have a wonderful time in Portugal.
If our national team qualifies for the 2011 RWC I hope to visit your country then - I know qualifying once more is not self-evident but I have a secret hope to be there and to see again our Wolves playing against (being thrashed by) the All Blacks.
Cheers!
Luis

Hi NewZealander,
if it would be only frosty mornings with reflections of the sunlight in the fresh fallen snow… no it isn’t like that, dear NewZealander, Germany is a cold, mostly rainy, sometimes misty place from October to April. So like a polarfox you need a good fur to get through… To take it seriously: though I mostly like, where I’m living, I’m sometimes longing to feel the sun on my skin and to look up in the clear blue skies. Yeah. My goodness! You are travelling half around the world (no even more than that), just to see Leonard?? Oh I like that. That’s probably a good investment in the experience of beauty and art. We’ve got too much reasonable persons on this planet, who only live for their daily rat race. No of course, you can’t put the blame on them, but it makes you sad... So Hello to NewZealand, perhaps I’ll see you in Lisbon.
(It’s time for me to sleep now. So long!)

Ha HA yes actually I am an ordinary reasonable person who runs a busy business and home has cared for family and now has grown kids who are saying.."what the hell do you think you are doing Mum!!"...(Exactly as they have managed to do with my support at a much younger age).......So now it is my turn.!!...and the older I get the more I Love the music of Leonard Cohen....along with Jennifer Warnes..two very good Canadians....I will be making it a holiday too though, and the idea of moving on up the road to the Nice Festival might also be attractive??....But then lets not miss the best of Portugal either eh??...So now I have the ticket I will fit the other plans around it...
I have been reading this forum for weeks, and the helpfulness and friendliness of the locals and has now convinced me that yes it will all work out, and be a great experience!....Thanks everyone for your kind words. Im sure we will all make sure to meet in July.....Meanwhile its a lovely late summers day here..must enjoy... :)

Hi Luis....I did not reply about the rugby before...seems to be what we are best known for.?..So did you get a game down there in the world cup last year??....I hope we did not "thrash" you.....?? I was following it sort of from a distance until the big day that we were beaten before the semis...the whole male population of NZ went into mourning...and those poor young fellows in the team..the rest of the country became experts in why they failed...(including saying they had had too nice a time in the neighbouring countries of Europe...)..(.Me, I did blame the referee for a few days!)But its just a game isnt it!!...(and if there are any Aussies reading they will say they are better than us anyway........So yes, 2011 we will be rugby hosts...you are welcome!!...
Meanwhile I will be in Portugal this rugby season wont I....!!!

Hello NewZealander
Indeed New Zealand is very famous for the Rugby - the All Blacks are quite mythical all around the world (as the Harlem Globetrotters are for basketball), but who saw the magnificent landscapes retained in the Lord of the Rings movies can not but want to go there. So visiting NZ during the 2011 RWC would be magnificent (the RWC would be just an excuse).
In the last world cup I was very lucky to get tickets to the Test against the All Blacks :D , and no I wasn't thrashed at all - I knew we didn't have a chance. In fact it was a very good match from our lads: we scored the tournament's first drop goal, we lost by less than 100 points and we made a try (100% fulfilment of what could be achieved, in the most optimistic sense :!: ). In the 3rd part of the mach I did celebrate in Lyon with the NZ legion that was there.
I was disappointed with the NZ exit (the French were very clever), but was more surprised how the Wallabies were squeezed by the English (never saw them playing so harmlessly - lots of credit to the Rose, anyway).
Well, when you come to Portugal the Rugby season will be over (and the main teams touring the South), the football season will also be over (and Portugal likely to be mourning the result of the Euro Cup), so you gotta be prepared to enjoy the summer, the good food and wine and the hospitality of our country. 8)
Hope to see you in the concert, maybe competing for a place close to the stage... ( I must practice my tackling technique).
Cheers,
Luis

"Competing for a place close to the stage....!!"...yes...! And you will expect to see me in my black rugby jersey pushing to the front eh :D ha ha I dont think so....But it will be good to see him...I have these wee mini binoculars that I take to concerts, and will most certainly be looking closely...as he sings "Im your Man!!"..and Im sure every woman in the area will be sure he is singing for them!!??......actually Ive spent the last few days perusing the internet looking at Lisbon!...the biking and the waterfront and the lovely historic looking buildings....its green and welcoming looking with the harbour nearby...I laughed to my friend at lunch today as I had thought it seemed a bit like Dunedin where I live, and we thought it funny that I was looking for somewhere like home way across the world.....!!I have finalised my tickets and will be there on the 17th from a big plane trip....settle quietly into my hotel for a good sleep... then a few days exploring ..will it be about mid 20's??...that seems to be a comfortable temperature as well. Not too hot As for Lord of the rings..we live about 4 hours away from Central Otago where a lot of that was filmed...some nice summertime concerts up there by the vineyards have been good too....It seems as I get older I want to make sure that I see all of the good live music....You forgot to mention our famous sailors!..now thats more my thing...is there much sailing in your harbour??....I have sailed, but not for a few years....I think I remember reading sailing books about around the world sailors calling at Lisbon as a last stop before their big ride into the Atlantic??... :?:

Hi NewZealander,
No I don't expect to be in any sort of scrum, fighting for a place close to the stage  . I'll also bring my binoculars to get the chance to get a closer look to the man and his band. Normally I am keener on seing the big picture from a distance and use the binoculars once in a while, but I guess that will depend also on the folks who will be travelling with me (if the majority votes for a place closer to the stage I'll be there).
For me the important is to be there, that the sound system is good and that Leonard is in good mood himself and thrashes us with an unforgettable concert (and then after we can celebrate with some fine Port wine).
My deep apologies for not mentioning your sailors  who indeed are famous for being very good. This is really embarrassing for a Portuguese, after all we sailed the whole world before everyone else did (I suppose we could claim to have invented the globalization back then in the end of the 14th century). In Lisbon and in the surroundings (such as Cascais) you should be able to find a lot of sail activity, and there are many other places for sailing in Portugal (there's sea almost everywhere). I am not a sailor myself, though the town where I live is by the sea - but we haven't got a harbour and it's quite expensive  .
Lisbon is normally very sunny and in July gets hot (it gets above 30 ºC in the afternoon), therefore the black rugby jersey is probably not the best clothing to wear (unless you're a teenager, of course). You should bring light cotton clothes, hat+sunglasses and, depending on your skin sensitivity, an adequate sun lotion may be advisable.
You ought to appreciate Lisbon's light at dawn/sunrise and sunset/dusk, as it is quite unique. That is due to the Tejo river that acts as a giant mirror reflecting the light and creates a subtle and magic atmosphere. It is well worth being an early bird to see the city awakening (and I'm a late riser).
Do you plan to stay many days in Portugal?
Cheers,
Luis

HI again Luis,
Yes Russell Coutts learned to sail down in the harbour at the bottom of my garden!..I was impressed when I moved down to this town at how anyone could get a boat and go sailing, when I lived in another place it was very elitist!..I'll be Staying in Lisbon till the concert, then probably moving on east on the European train system to get to Lucca by the 27th..then another week in Italy(and now I am telling the world of my movements!,) but never mind Im sure I will be one of hundreds probably doing the same thing.Lisbon is my longest stop...time to stop and draw breath and relax a bit. I will take your advice and try to get myself staying somewhere that I can enjoy the early morning light as usually that is my time of the day...I saw this picture of an amazing big long bridge disappearing away into the distance over the water!!>.is that across the harbour??.I must say now that I probably have about ten and a few years on you, and back in New Zealand will be my very grounded husband!, He's had a degenerative illness for a long time, which gets worse. He is unable to travel,(and possibly would not have anyway despite his illness).HE will be keeping a check on the rugby Im sure!....So Ive got a bit of time out from the caring :D to find my wings and fly for a few weeks!, to see the places many of my friends have been coming back telling me about!...Hence my idea for a wee rest in your lovely country when I first arrive....It seems to me the Portuguese people have appeared very welcoming on these posts...I will check in with you closer to the time if thats ok to find out more about getting to the concert, and around the place. Do they hire bikes down by the waterfront??.... :D

Hello,
It's sad to hear about your husband, it should be nice for you to travel together half the globe. I find it more and more interesting to do it with my woman, as time goes by and kids grow independent. It's a sort of love+time fruition that apparently comes with ageing (and I like it :D ).
So you're staying a just for few days in Lisbon (and have to take some time to recover from the jetlag). You may want to ride a bike in the waterfront (bikes are available in many places) but to know the city a bit it is better to use the underground, bus and tramway (where available) services (overground preferred, the sightseeing is great). Lisbon is spread over 7 hills that aren't easy to climb on a bicicle (and you're supposed to rest for a faster jetlag recovery - it is important to be fit and awake on the 19th evening, right? 8) ).
I believe the bridge you mention is the "Vasco da Gama" Bridge, named after our famous captain who lead the first complete sea travel to India. The bridge entered in service in 1998, celebrating the 500 years of Vasco da Gama's success. The bridge's total length is 17.2 km (10 miles), 10 of which over the river (it is the longest bridge in Europe and ranks 4th worldwide).
There's a lot to see in Lisbon, especially if you're staying just for some days, hence it is wise to make a selection according to what moves you most.
Take care,
Luis

Oh my word!!!.Thank goodness you mentioned the date, and it is right at the top of this....I have been working too hard!! the concert is the 19th !! for some reason I thought it was the 21st!!...oh well thats good then, I'm not leaving Lisbon until the 22nd.....I had planned on five nights in Lisbon  ..So thats great!!.the concert is right in the middle of that time, I will not be packing up straight away afterwards and leaving :D ...I gave myself 5 days to get across to Lucca....

So yes I will have quite a lot of time before and after the concert...(and you are right about the hills, we have them here our city is built on hills too, I enjoy biking along the side of the harbour and not up the hills like some of my energetic friends...I had visualised walking the hills of Lisbon, the parks and there are trams??...and then perhaps cycling around by the sea...but I will just have to wait to find out...

I hear what you are saying about "growing old together"....He's in a wheelchair now, you are right some people would want to do it......But the trip would be medically impossible now, and besides he wants me to come and have a break....He came to the Dave Dobbyn Vineyard concert in Queenstown over summer, and the Split ENZ concert in another city recently as well....Europe is a little too far .....MEanwhile..!! thank you for alerting me to my huge date mistake!!..I will be fit and well for the 19th...

Many thanks Luis for giving me lots of "local" information, and where to find the sailing!...

I was wondering after your comment on the sound...does anyone local have much to say about the accoustics in that venue??..
I guess it also depends on the systems he brings?...or is there a good "local" provider. Good (Wide reaching) sound gear makes such a difference to a large outdoor venue..(someone close to me looks for those "banana shaped" speakers..and knows it will be good)...
So Yes Luis, I agree with you on everything you are saying...and yes..I must try the Fine Port(uguese) wine!. :) ..must be better than any of that local ) stuff in my cupboard....??
