Where is the 2010 Event??
Re: Where is the 2010 Event??
Hi Axel ~
It would be a miracle of magnitude if it were Berlin, again; as that's where it was the last time, in 2006. I don't know that Henning has the head for that again, SO soon. I can assure you that your help will be welcome wherever it's at in 2010, though.

I would love it to be in London but the amount of effort needed to get these events organised is herculean. You have to get the venues and artists so much work involved.
Dublin 14th June, Manchester 20th June, O2 17th July, Matlock Bandstand Aug 28, O2 14th November, Royal Albert Hall 17th and 18th November 2008, MBW 11th July 2009, Liverpool Echo 14th July 2009

Hey, Lizzy.
I realize that Berlin isn't really in the cards, but I like it nonetheless. Too bad that's in the past (and the faraway furture).
If it was in London, surely we could coerce Pete to perform?

I agree with Joe on this if there is someone willing to take on the task in Nashville. There is actually a connection and it is a great town.Joe Way wrote:Tom,

I think that Nashville should be a consideration for the next North American gathering. I would certainly be willing to help organize that one.

As for 2010 I would vote for anywhere in the British Isles, or Spain, though I am sure where ever it is will be fun since it will be full of LC fans.

You are on target Goddess! Wish you could have made it to London for a great crowd! As for 2010 ... I am sure where ever it is will be fun since it will be full of LC fans.
Re: Where is the 2010 Event??
The next Event in North America would be in 2012 if we keep the interval of two years. Nashville is a splendid idea, but we have no members at all in the city... However, several previous events have been organized without a local leader of the committee.I agree with Joe on this if there is someone willing to take on the task in Nashville. Ya know -- it might could be that, in the event that the Event was held twice in a row in North America, on account of there were some energetic folk here and maybe not so much in Europe -- that what the hey -- the sun would continue to rise in the east anyway.
Just sayin, is all.

I haven't been following posts as closely as perhaps I should so I didn't realise until now that a Cohen connection wasn't necesarry to qualify as a location for an event.
What a great suggestion from Joe for Nashville.
Nashville's euorpean twin city of music is of course Liverpool.
From Nashville to Liverpool, has quite a ring to it eh?
We have more musicans, poets, artists, writers and sundry bohemianly inclined scallywags in Liverpool than anywhere else in the UK.
Why the very streets are paved with creativity, except for Saturday nights when they are awash with other stuff.
Outside of Sin City (London) Liverpool has more theatres, music venues, galleries and hotels than any other city in the UK.
And of course Leonard under the influence of something or other did perform in the city on a hot sticky night way back in 1974.

Liverpool sounds most agreeable, as I have friends in the UK.

Ken,
I think Liverpool sounds wonderful. Who can we get to organize it?

Re: Where is the 2010 Event??
Two reasons that London would be appropriate for 2010 are that it will be fifty years since the winter that Leonard first came to London (Dec 59 - early 1960) and forty years since Leonard's first concert at The Royal Albert Hall. In my present circumstances, I am in no position to consider myself a potential organizer. However, I hope that I might have some involvement when the times comes.

Ladies and Gentleman, Cohenites of the world, friends,
On behalf of Polish Cohen fans I’d like to announce our candidacy for the 2010 Cohen Event in Kraków, Poland.
We have the will and the team ready to accomplish the demanding task. Here’s our organizing committee:
- Justyna Galant
- Małgorzata Leonowicz
- Marzena Brynkus
- Jakub Kasperkiewicz
- Kazimierz Sak
- and myself, Sebastian Korta
Mirek Dworniczak, Paweł Górny, Paweł Orkisz and many others have also volunteered to help.
We do realize there exists no direct connection between Leonard and Kraków. He has probably never been here, though, who knows, maybe till 2010 a lot will have changed.
However, there are several reasons why are proposing Kraków as the next European Cohen Event site:
1. we have the team ready to organize it
2. Leonard is very popular, respected and well-liked in Poland, as he himself once declared: "I discovered that Poland was probably my largest audience in the world.” – we’ll try to prove that to you.
3. Kraków is a beautiful, historic city with a wide range of cultural and tourist activities. It’s one of the European Capitals of Culture as well as one of the first sites to appear on the UNESCO world heritage sites list. This is where the Jagiellonian University is. It is also the city of two of the Polish Nobel Prize winners: Czesław Miłosz and Wisława Szymborska. Kraków has a lot to offer before, during and after the Cohen Event and it’s worth a visit even by those Cohenites furthest from the heart of Europe.
4. Kazimierz is one of the most important centres Jewish Cultural Heritage. An annual Jewish Culture Festival takes place here attracting visitors from Kraków, Poland, and all over the world. We would like to offer you the precious moments of shared singing of Leonard’s songs in the exceptional atmosphere of this old Jewish quarter.
We are counting on your support, help, ideas and feedback. We’ll be happy to answer all the questions.
With the best of wishes of Happy Christmas, Happy Hanukah and Happy New Year,
Sebastian Korta

Dear Sebastian ~
I'm thrilled beyond measure. In the tiger world, that would be chuffed. Count me in to help in any way I can, beforehand or upon arrival. I visited Cracow in 2006 and it's an incredible city.
For anyone interested in the history of the Jews, Auschwitz and Birkenau are nearby and ought to be included as a day trip [taking the longer of two types of tours... I took the shorter and will return for the longer] for someone getting that close.
There is also the incredible salt mine. I believe Pope John Paul's childhood home is also within traveling distance. Come prepared to buy amber, too.
Yes, I've noticed that Leonard seems to have a special affection for Poland, too.
YaY, Justyna
and Pawel Gorny
.
Merry Christmas and Happy 2008 to all of you. Thanks for making my day!
Love,
Lizzy

Sebastian, as you know, I think Krakow would be great!
I was with you in May when one of those early serious discussions was taking place (with the natural misgivings that arose at the time), so it's so good to see your commitment and resolve emerge, with not only a city nominated, but a team as well!
Cheers
