Courting with Leonard Cohen

Post by Mark A. Murphy »

I am interested to know if any other Cohenites have ever used Leonard's words to court a member of the opposite sex as I have done? My most recent excursion into this territory was when I was dating a young woman over the summer. As it was early on in the relationship and I didn't want to frighten her away, I used the following lines from the song, Avalanche in a letter to her to express my feelings...

I have begun to long for you,
I who have no greed;
I have begun to ask for you,
I who have no need.

I have used Leonard's poems and songs several times before in this respect, and, indeed, a girl once sent one of Leonard's poems to me in a Valentine's Card!

My hubby did with me. It worked - else I'd not be calling him hubby. ;-)
We used to lay in the bunk on our boat and he'd quote bits of songs and poems from Leonard. It was hubby's boat first. He built it (took 9 years) and then we met shortly after.

This was taken 15 years ago when putting the name on the boat. We used to jokingly call the dingy "Leonard"

How could "You were KY jelly, and I was vaseline" ever fail to produce a direct hit?

Ever any quarrels to call it Bird on a Wire, or Bird on the Wire? Aye. She's a lovely boat.

No quarrels between us though we both know Leonard sings/writes it *the* rather than *a*.
The boat was named before I met hubby, but her name was not yet on her. I know we talked about it - but I forget his reason why now!

No one else has ever mentioned it. In fact few people even reconised the name! Hubby says when he told me the name and I said "Oooh! After the song/poem from Leonard Cohen?" that I was the first to know it.
Maybe that's when he fell in love with me? ;) LOL! Or at least I was someone interesting to go to lunch with! LOL!!!!

Bird on 'a' Wire was the name of the 1974 film (directed by Tony Palmer) of Leonard's European tour.

So there you go. Love wins in the end. Either way the boat would have been aptly named. Which, of course, is as it should be.
