“Meeting Leonard Cohen?” – a documentary

Post by monsieurcamembert »

Hi there,
Yaron Hallis here from Australian band Monsieur Camembert. As some of you know, last year we released a double CD of our Leonard Cohen show Famous Blue Cheese.
We are still touring this show extensively, having performed it all over Australia, as well as at the International Leonard Cohen Festival in Edmonton in July this year.
SO, having been completely and utterly immersed in the music and words of Leonard Cohen for the past 3 years, Leonard touring Australia presents a unique and essential challenge for me: meeting Leonard Cohen!
So this documentary will be exploring my passion and love of Leonard Cohen, from discovering him as a teenager because he bears the same name as my father (who’s name, bizarrely, is also Leonard Cohen!), to conceiving and devising the Famous Blue Cheese album and show, to my personal quest to meet him while he is in Australia. In fact, not only meet him, but attempt to invite him over for Shabbat (Sabbath) dinner while he’s in Sydney!
So, I’m calling out to anyone in the Cohen universe who might have any ideas as to how to make this happen…

Ciao,
Yaron

Hello Yaron, as a big admirer of your work I'd love to encourage you, but unfortunately I have to be a killjoy. The tour management has had to turn down several (and all) similar requests.

http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/article/428026 wrote already in the beginning of the tour: [Leonard's manager Robert Kory] "created a bubble to protect Cohen, with a ban on interviews and backstage visitors."
Robert has explained: "There are some differences with this tour than any Leonard has undertaken in the past. One of the most important is the closed backstage and absence of any press interviews. I am happy to report that Leonard has found this procedure to be a revelation in protecting and recharging himself on a daily basis between performances. Without this procedure, there would be no tour. So, with regret, I must confirm that Leonard will not be granting interviews, or even meeting friends backstage. Of course, he does not intend to be discourteous in any way, and hopes you understand how his rest and silence between shows is key to the success of each of the shows."
