Here's a song I wrote for Leonard Cohen in July 2008 after seeing him in London. He was brilliant - warm, passionate, compassionate, deep, humorous, in fine voice and with fine musicians, a real inspiration. I had to write this for him and that other peerless master of words - Bob Dylan.

HOMAGE
Only mystical poets can survive
Even the darkest times
Some even earn their living
With their wry and sensual rhymes
Some fathom the unfathomable
With voices deep as oceans
Expressing and exposing
Their most vulnerable emotions
In lyrics of aching beauty
That search for mercy with such longing
Through the tell-tale tears of a wounded heart
That searches for belonging
Some burn with searing fire
Incandescent as birthing stars
Independent and transcendent
As they try to heal the scars
That time and love use to mould the soul
And piece together our fragmented lives
To make a perfect whole
