Anniversary
From the garden muck she digs out
. a silver biscuit tin and carries it
. to the apple tree where she kneels.
Her dirty finger nails slide under
.the leaf embossed edge and tug
.. open the lid of this empty box.
. Indulging in secret fantasies
she imagines; a baseball cap,
.a science fair award and blue eyes
that never were. Softly she touches
.the mole on her neck and feels little
.fingers reaching up to snuggle in.
Into the empty box she places
.a tear, seals the top tight and buries
..with with a spade and hands. This spot
. where brothers play tag is better,
less lonely.
Deed done she rises
brushes off her skirt and face
and runs back to the house to make dinner.

Oh, Cate... this is wrenching...
The softness in your actions and thoughts pay so touching a tribute to your son. I'm so sorry for your loss.
My own beliefs include G~d and I believe he is there.

Hi B oss
~
For me, it is G~d.
When I use the ~ rather than the -, it far more replicates ~ for me ~ the Hu, the Sound of G~d... the soundwaves of G~d, the soundwaves through space, and the ongoing, soft waves of eternity. The - is merely a space 'holder' when I see it.
The concept may be Jewish in origin; yet, it can be, and is for me, personally applicable regardless of faith or religion. For me, my adaptation works best.
If G~d is undefined, how can another person define how G~d's lack of definition is represented? I'm forced to return to how this space holder representing all of the unknown of G~d might be symbolized in languages lacking the dash.
My, my, Boss, you might as well remove your exclamation mark, as well

Re: Anniversary
My dear Cate,
This is lovely…and so touching. You really paint a beautiful picture. I feel like a spy peering over the fence. A stranger to all of the unspoken details, and yet, I still understand. That speaks volumes about your ability.
Warmly,

You're right, Pinata. You're also right that it is beautiful and it speaks volumes about Cate's ability. A very tender telling, Cate.I feel like a spy peering over the fence. A stranger to all of the unspoken details, and yet, I still understand.

Thank you for sharing this gentle, loving poem Cate.
The empty silver tin a very fine image.

Sorry Cate
to deviate
but it seems odd -
Lizzy/Adam - why can't it also be God?

Thank you Imaginary friend, I'm glad the tin worked and thank you to Lizzy for stating that it was a tender telling - that's a nice compliment.
thank you for the compliment, that was nice of you.
Now whether god should be spelled g~d or g-d, I have no idea but I would probably just steal Mats line and spell it
oh even better Red Poppy (I was still typing when you posted)
or as Red Poppy radically suggests God ... Hummmm, in fact I've even seen Leonard do it that way.
oh, please don't do that, I have neighbor who does that and it's a bit uncomfortable.piñata heart wrote:I feel like a spy peering over the fence.

Wow, Cate.
I welled up for the place where brothers play tag.
I would get rid of the "that never were" and readjust the line breaks around there.
Really nice work here.
I'm afraid I can't read it again because I'm at work and it will make me cry all the way.

Hi Red Poppy ~
Nice to see you here.
Everyone's relationship with G~d, G-d, God [or lack, thereof] is such a personal one, that I feel that spelling is a rather minor issue, all things considered. God works for me, in certain circumstances, where the other person may not know or subscribe to or understand there being an alternate spelling. I prefer G~d, but that's just me.
I'm sure God won't mind if you use every letter of the traditional spelling.
Yes, from me, too, Cate...

... was so poignant and effective, too. At once, I saw both beneath the ground and above it... the sharing of fun and the loneliness, yet somehow being a part... you took us a lot of different places in this poem, Cate.where brothers play tag is better
less lonely.

I don't remember where now, but I thought I read somewhere that several symbols were acceptable as God's vowel. G*d, for instance. Of course, in this case, electrically on the internets, I'm not sure if spelling it God is much different from G*d, G-d, G+d, G~d, G d or Gid. It's not really an 'o' at all, it's just code. Why does it have to be the o that is neglected? They're all just code.
Hmm, that's a good point, but don't you still have to conceive of the name? Consciously choose a spelling? Type the letters?
Yes, *f c0urse, but y+u can spell it any way that pleases y%u.
But what if I am still not convinced that the universe requires the Gud force in order to exist in the first place, let alone that he gives a rat's fiddle how we spell one permutation of his unnamed name in our language?
Let me explain. We all once lived in a tiny little thing the size of a pea, which was perfect. The whole universe was there, but no one could see it because no one existed yet. We were all one - all Gcd. We existed that way for something like 10^-godillion seconds. (Perfection is a very unstable existence; frankly I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.) The pea was part of Ged. Gourd was a little bit lonely, & I don't think the Goddesses liked him very much. So he made us to make himself feel good. You see Gawd, or the G~.~d force, as you call it, had an orgasm, and we are the jizzum! That's how it happens that the universe is one. Sure, there are other universes, but Gxoxds don't stand around mixing samples of Cupid's toothpaste together, so don't plan on visiting alternate universes soon. We have to get a lot better at traveling first. The cool thing about being a G\:d is that after 10^godillion years, he's still not done. On a cosmic level, all things are as they should be, and we're just here to play the bonophone. That's what praying is, so do it right - on your knees.

yeah, I've probably taken it a bit too far, but it was fun.
