leonard cohen's post europe schedule (jarkko PLEASE respond)

Post by atherese »

My friend and I are both major Cohen fans, and really want to see him one more time. We are also University students with very tight budgets who live in Toronto Canada. We are considering flying out to France for what may be our final opportunity to see him live again. Before we seriously damage our budgets, could you please let me know what the chances are of Cohen returning to North America. I've read the articles, and know he has some more international plans, and is definitely doing Australia/NZ. Please please let me know what the chances are of him coming back to NA and performing on this tour (in which case, providing we aren't broke from flying to paris, we'll catch any concert we can).
Thanks!

While you are waiting for Jarkko to respond, have a look at a post I made a while ago. I have no definitive news to give you other than what I wrote in that post.

Only Jarkko, our hard working, beleaguered, Forum chief Pooh-Bah has the authority to announce additions to the schedule, after he is given confirmed info.

Welcome to the Forum, atherese, and take heart.

I'm afraid I cannot give any definitive answer, for two reasons. The last concerts in the schedule are still in progress, with no final decisions. And (just like Arlene said), I have no permission to reveal tentative dates before they are officially confirmed by the tour management. However, I can add that to my best knowledge there are no concerts in Canada in the plans for this year.

Everything Jarkko writes is done with purpose and forethought. Hmm, underlining in Canada. This could, of course, be for emphasis. Or, could it give some hope to a neighbouring country? ;-)

ps..no need to respond to this one Jarkko!

Diana, let's look at this from a different angle. atherese asked about "chances of Cohen returning to North America". Jarkko has basically eliminated concerts in Canada in 2010. According to this map of North America, there are other countries (legend in red) remaining as potential concert candidates. Mexico City sounds appealing to me. Oops...wrong thread for guessing cities. :D

Hmmmm, I wonder if Jarkko had North America in mind - or the USA, bearing in mind that Leonard seems to be closing 2010 with a Pacific rim tour ......

Great map Arlene...and yes there are possibilites!

@Wendy...here's Wikipedia's definition of the Pacific Rim:

"The Pacific Rim refers to the countries and cities located around the edge of the Pacific Ocean. There are many economic centers around the Pacific Rim, such as Auckland, Busan, Brisbane, Guangzhou, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Kobe, Lima, Los Angeles, Manila, Melbourne, Nagoya, Osaka, Panama City, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, Santiago, Seattle, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, Taipei, Tokyo, Vancouver, and Yokohama. Honolulu is the headquarters of various intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations of the Pacific Rim, including the East-West Center and the Institute of Asian Research. In addition, the RIMPAC exercise is coordinated by United States Pacific Command which is headquartered in Honolulu."

One never knows....

Diana

I had Honolulu in mind when I wrote my message (the reference to the Pacific Rim was all mine, as you know; nothing to do with any official description of the tour) but the more I think about it, the more I am convinced that the last show might be "back home" in California. And, depending on timing, that could be a problem for me. It would soooooo easy to fly in to LA or SF for a couple of days ....

Hi Wendy,

I'm starting to get a funny sense about that too! Honolulu could be a resting point on the flight back to the US, so that might be a possibility for a nice laid back concert; but I wouldn't be surprised to have a west coast city pop up as the final concert for the 2010 tour. Although there have been concerts in Oakland and San Jose, San Francisco has not been a venue yet. And even though they were in LA, by late fall that will be over a year and a half ago. Will be interesting to see how this unfolds. :D

Hope the timing is right for you. You've made all the others!!

Hi Guys
Thanks for the replies. So has Leonard said he is going to do a 'Pacific Rim' tour. Also, does 'not this year' mean' not this tour?'
Thanks!

atherese asked Jarkko to "please let me know what the chances are of Cohen returning to North America". Jarkko replied, "...to my best knowledge there are no concerts in Canada in the plans for this year."

It is always fun trying to figure out Jarkko's hints and clues. Semantics often prove to be important in his posts, so the underlined in Canada probably represents a real clue. If so, it would seem to indicate that some other part of North America remains a possibility for the 2010 tour. Is Hawaii part of North America? Geologically, it is not part of the continent, but one could argue that geopolitically it is North American. But maybe the putative clue has nothing to do with the USA. How about Mexico?

Hi atherese

No, Leonard has NOT said that he is doing a "Pacific Rim" tour. As I explained above, the description was all mine, surmised from the NZ, Australia & Phnom Penh dates. Nothing to do with any official description of the tour.

Hi atherese,

Just realized no one really answered your question. Yes..."not this year" does mean "not this tour". Before Leonard had his back injury which delayed the tour, there were plans to hopefully play several venues in eastern Canada perhaps during the summer. That won't happen now, but God-willing the 2011 Tour will include Canada. Keep checking the forum just in case there may be a pleasant surprise for later this year...but not in Canada. btw, I'm strictly working on a hunch and intuition...no inside info... :)

All the best,

Hi Diana,
Thanks for your answer. Do you know if Leonard has confirmed that he will be doing a 2011 tour? For some reason, i was under the impression that this was probably going to be the last one.

Hi Anna,

Not a direct confirmation but it is common knowledge that he does want to return to Eastern Canada for a few concerts...and who knows what else! Especially if a new album makes an appearance in 2011. :D
