A Normal Day

Written in a rebelious frame of mind on National Poetry day last Thursday ( 7th Oct ):
A Normal Day
I hope you will forgive me
If I choose to just forget
That this day is for poets
And poems not written yet
For there are many “special” days
Taking place throughout the year
It’s hard to mention all of them
In this public sphere
A day for world religion
Let’s say amen to that
A day to celebrate your pet
So no one kicks the cat
Let’s not forget St Valentine
And lots of jiggy jig
When all the women of the world
Long for something big
There’s mothers day and fathers day
A children’s day as well
But not for poor old grandma
Alive ? it's hard to tell
A day for storytelling
I’ve heard a few of those
In my local hostelry
Just before they close
April fool now there’s a day
To execute a joke
On those " perfect " people
And nauseating folk
A water day a purple day
A day for giving blood
A day to put wrong trousers on
As if I ever would
A day just for lefthanders
To shout and make a fuss
But can I also celebrate
If ambi-dextri-ous
Guy Fawkes day that’s bonfire night
To the likes of me and you
There is even “talk like a pirate day”
And you can bring a parrot too
But the one that is my favourite
The one that makes me smile
November nineteenth, Toilet day
When “parting” becomes worthwhile
And although I sometimes struggle
Which makes me shed a tear
I always seem to manage it
More than once a year
So "special " days are not for me
In any kind of way
I think I’ll just be awkward
And have a “normal “ day
A Normal Day
I hope you will forgive me
If I choose to just forget
That this day is for poets
