Dino Soldo Video Interview

Post by Florian »

Just found this on Y-tube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zy1p4pVK_O8

Little Interview with Dino, mainly about one of his wind instruments.
(bizzare thing by the way, never seen any of these instruments before..)
Its some kind of comercial from the instrument manufracture, but its still nice.
Enjoy!

Thanks Florian for bringing this lovely little video to our attention!

Dino is a master craftsman, besides being a genuinely nice guy! The eigenharp is an amazing instrument and it was fascinating to learn all its capabilities. Dino was right....it will be interesting to see how the young kids of today who love to create music incorporate the innovations of the future!

Now we have a name, the eigenharp! Isn't this what LC refers to as 'the instrument of wind'? Dino says, "He (Johnny 'Guitar' Watson) had a way of keeping the crowd in the parlm of his hand.". When Dino performs his solos, I feel the torch has been passed. Dino is truly a master of his instruments.

Thank you for this link Florian!

Warmest regards,
Mary

I'm pretty sure it's the AKAI Electronic Wind Instrument- the one that looks like an electronic clarinet- that LC refers to. I think Dino's been playing that since the start of the world tour, and the Eigenharp only more recently?

mnkyface is right ... having watched the video, I can definitely say that Dino didn't have the Eigenharp on the 2009 tour (last time I saw him). It must be an addition for the 2010 world tour. The AKAI Wind Controller, though, has been there from the beginning and was what LC used to refer to as the "instruments of wind".

BTW it's probably worth mentioning that the AKAI controller (and I think also the Eigenharp) is really only a MIDI controller -- a device which turn the combination of the musician's gestures and breath pressure into electronic 'notes'. They don't themselves make the sounds ... that's done by synthesizers that receive the MIDI notes. That's how Dino can be using the same controller to be 'playing' a clarinet one minute and a sort of violin sound the next (they're just different programmes on the synthesizer). So, I think LC's term-- the "instruments of wind" -- is a pretty good name for the very broad family of sounds that Dino can make using these controllers.

I see I wasn't the only one wondering what this instrument that looks like a prototype of a futuristic skyscraper was. Here is a video in German and English about the Eigenharp, shot for a music fair that was held in March 2010. In it they say it was first presented at the beginning of 2010, so it's very new and most probably still very rare.
