Beautiful, thank you.

Hi musicmania,
Leonard Cohen knows about 3:00 am moments of "light" that offer artistic inspiration/illumination
and the kinship with Paul Simon on that kind of experience is evident in this deep and empathetic tribute.
Thanks for the link. Had never heard this before.

He does indeed. They are kindred spirits in that sense. When I saw your topic heading I thought that is what you are posting. I remember the first time I heard it I had goosebumps. It is obvious I love Leonard but I'm also a fan of Paul Simon and the opening line of this song is my all time favourite opening line "Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk with you again". In the words of Leonard SUBLIME! Going to see Mr. Simon in concert in a few weeks in an intimate venue and can't wait

wow Gwen I never heard that before either. The Sound of Silence is a hell of a poetic lyric, not surprising LC wanted to recite it. Cheers. Enjoy the concert.

Hi musicmania (Gwen),
What a great first line it is.
The song was in my consciousness because of three experiences over the
last month (hearing a singing duo covering it, and another musician speaking of the influence of Simon and Garfunkel, and starting to read the current issue of Rolling Stone -- May 12, 2011). One of the Rollilng Stone cover stories
is "Paul Simon The Long, Restless Journey of a Musical Genius." Haven't read all of the article yet. On the contents
page, Paul Simon is said to be "a perfectionist who agonizes over every lyric..." Leonard Cohen is known
for many rewrites and, arguably, could be said to be kindred with Paul Simon on the perfectionist trait in
the songwriting process. Enjoy the Paul Simon concert that'll be in a venue that is on this side of intimacy.

One could really be talking about Leonard with that statement. I went searching for that article but could only find bits of it on their website. Will see if I can get the actual magazine up town later.Steven wrote:Hi musicmania (Gwen),

Sometimes, when I hear that song again - I can still feel the frustration with news media following the JFK assassination, the desire for an Internet, which is 'beyond' the world believing the way they twist the news. I can hear church-like John Donne arguments against remote communication as isolating (but I am a Rock), and a warning on the wall about futures. It was prior to the Watts riot as well as other events -- and they always win if they turn it violent - they have the tanks

Re: Simon and Garfunkel: "Sound of Silence"
Hi IMM,
"Sound of Silence" was written in the aftermath of the assasination of JFK, yes. Hadn't thought of that till reading
your post. Here's another song that arose in the aftermath of, and in response to, JFK's assasination; this one is by
Phil Ochs, "Crucifixion": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd8sirz99zo. And, here's
Simon and Garfunkel with "I Am A Rock": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=My9I8q-iJCI.
These songs communicate a lot better than most in-person conversations, then and now.
