Leonard Cohen credited as co-writer of new Coldplay song

Post by brightnow »

'Up With The Birds' has also been registered and Leonard Cohen is listed as one of the co-writers. Apparently the song contains 'samples' but it doesn't state where the samples are from. Might be a Leonard Cohen song.

This interview was taken 9 months ago, on 25/11/2010. No mention of samples, but some info about the song:
One of them [15 songs] is 'Up With The Birds'. It might be a duet, but we don't know who with yet. The other two might change.

+ Bunch of threads, all dedicated to "Major Minus" @ Coldplay forum:

P.S. from this thread:
A: I don't understand how Major Minus is PKA Up With The Birds at all.
B: Who said that? They're two completely different songs.

...More questions, less answers yet.

It seems that this info was discovered by a Coldplay fan while browsing through database of Performing Rights Society.

Maybe somebody could browse that database to find did LC copyrighted songs from his next album? :) We browsed some databases few years back, and found bunch of copyrighted and unrecorded song written by Leonard and Sharon Robinson in the 1980s, like Lucky, Summertime (recorded later by Sharon), Reagan's Rag (?) etc.

I watched the YouTube live broadcast of Coldplay's concert in Madrid last night (good but not quite up to their Glastonbury 2011 standard, but that would have been almost impossible to equal) in which they played a few of the tracks from this new album. I don't think they sang Up With The Birds featuring Leonard's lines, but I was distracted a couple of times so I may have missed it. The concert is still available to view on YouTube.

Interestingly, beforehand, there was an interview about the production of the show (included on the above YouTube link before the show kicks in) and a general chat, when they were asked who were their favourite singers and greatest influences. Bob Dylan featured greatly, so did Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Neil Young, plus Chris Martin believed the biggest influence was Jeff Buckley. My moment was when Guy Berryman said he had been listening to Leonard Cohen's Stories Of The Street, he just can't get that song out of his mind - what wonderful taste these guys have as well as being able to bash out amazing stuff of their own. Rock on lads.
