Born in Chains and Feels so Good not on Old Ideas
Born in Chains and Feels so Good not on Old Ideas
Please excuse my ignorance if this has already been covered but I was expecting Born in Chains and Feels so Good to be on the new album; have they been released elsewhere? Thanks.

They'll be on the next album.

Isn't it great to have a 'next' album to look forward too?

Re: Born in Chains and Feels so Good not on Old Ideas
I can understand why Born In Chains isn't on this album. It's too broad-brush narrative against the other songs and perhaps LC decided it wasn't telling the truth (the reason he re-wrote it as I Can't Forget for I'm Your Man.) Maybe Feels So Good was left off to avoid over-doing the blues structured sound - a good decision I think although I loved the song. Dylan ignored this on Time Out Of Mind to the detriment of the album the think. Way too much blues stodge and not enough melody!
Re: Born in Chains and Feels so Good not on Old Ideas
Jonnie,
I can follow your line of reasoning (only not sure about "not telling the truth"),
and besides that - all the songs on Old Ideas are so personal and intimate;
such a contrast with Born In Chains, which sounds as a hymn (at least the version
we have heard on the tour).
And I think you are also right about Feels So Good.
I am very happy with the final choice of songs for Old Ideas.

Re: Born in Chains and Feels so Good not on Old Ideas
I was referring to something LC said himself.... more than 20 years ago now. He's been working on Born In Chains that long... indeed around 1988 he quoted it extensively but said it didn't sound true to him.... and so he subsituted "I was born in chains & take out of Egypt" for "I stumbled out of bed/I got ready for the struggle" (I Can't Forget) which he said was truer. Perhaps he still has trouble with the allegorical nature of Born In Chains. I too am happy with the final choice. Itmay be his best ever album! So far.....

To me, Born In Chains is the mirror twin of Show Me The Place (for that matter, Show Me The Place could have been named "I Will Die In Chains") the songs are complete polar opposites of each other. It would have been interesting to see the two presented within the same album (structurally similar to Boogie Street with its twin peaks in the beginning and end).

Perhaps that is why he decided not to include it on this album. Maybe he will go in to opposite direction in the next album?
