Re: greatest hits - listeners vote - bbc radio 6
Which song of Leonard's released after 10 March 2002 should be favoured for a "100 songs of the decade" shortlist then?
I was surprised that "Old Ideas" - I was umming and aahing whether it was called "Ten Old Songs" for a moment there
- made so few of the "Best of 2012" lists of significance in my neck of the woods. It did make the Rough Trade Shops list somewhere in the middling section, but, for example, Piccadilly Records overlooked it on their top 100 albums list completely (implying that, whilst Lana Del Ray got out of the starting blocks at the same time, she was ahead at the 100 metre finishing line at least).
Is this observation just another sign of me reaching the "Radio 2 listener" and beyond age bracket? Out of step with the times and never likely to be doing much fancy footwork with them ever again. I've long ago lost track of the Top 20 singles (though sadly know the name of the latest winner of X Factor, which possibly counts these days for much the same thing
).
I listened to "Old Ideas" in the car yesterday on a longish journey and came to the conclusion it was definitely up there with Leonard's finest and quality through and through. Maybe like a fine wine (and Hallelujah) it'll just take a few good years to reach a mature audience.
