What Leonard Cohen Did for Me

Just finished watching the programme on B.B.C.2, Scotland (1120-1150pm).
I've seen it before, but it's good that the programme is being repeated so soon.
The commentator said "there are over 700 cover versions of Leonard Cohen songs", as the files were scanned from this forum onto the T.V. screen.
Correction: it's now over 1000!!!
Was the programme shown in Englandwales?
Andrew.

Hello,
I've watched it here in Belgium for the first time. Nice to finally see something about Leonard Cohen on tv!

Andrew my friend, the fact that Wales is joined to England geographically is unfortunate enough, joining us grammatically as well is too much!

Hello,
Yes, the programme was shown down here (I'm one of the few people I know who generally thinks of Manchester as being 'down South' - all a matter of perspective I suppose).
Very good to see LC on the telly. I'm inclined to echo Kathryn Williams' sentiments...

I rushed home to catch the last 20 mins of this programme, only to discover that it was somewhat disappointing in its content, and way too short.
Not only that but one newspaper I read earlier in the day said it was a programme about the late Leaonard Cohen.
So I was fairly staggered and bewildered when no mention of a death was uttered throughout the programme.
I am therefore assuming that as I have not seen any news of this, it is total fabrication, thankfully.
Hopefully one fine day we will see something a little more substantial about this fine and revered person.

Any programme that does not contain an interview with the person in it's title is going to be struggling for content.
A lot of rehashed previous footage from Songs From the Life and Ladies and Gentlemen, etc.

Yes, but it is what he did for me. I liked the show because of that, it's good exploration of the fan culture. Very informing and well done etnographic work, close to recent theories and approach to the popular culture thru fans and subcultures.

I think I commented after its first showing that I thought that this was a very weak little programme. Arthur Smith's contributions were irritating but Nick Cave, at least, was intelligent and analytical. The bit with the fans round the table was pretty feeble (not you personally, Lizzie!).

Hi. Like scorpihun, I only caught the last 20 mins of the programme, but was still delighted to catch what I saw. For those who missed it, I've found out - literally in the last hour or so - that the whole programme is now at your (and my!) fingertips:

Kathryn Williams, of course, gave us her tantalisingly brief, but very moving interpretation of 'Hallelujah' on said show.
Cheers

This was indeed an interesting program, I can't help but think a little long overdue as well. It's a shame it was so short, but perhaps that's all it really needed to be. I think it brings to light that a new LC documentry/film for this current era is in order.

I'm listening to this programme repeatedly, beginning just a while ago. It appeared to have [maybe?] gotten to the end ~ but stopped in the middle of Kathryn Williams saying something. However, I have to go all the way to the beginning and start over. Does it really cut off?
I didn't care for Nick Cave's comment regarding his earlier records that they are "really dark records, actually . . . but, they are, they are really dark." What!?! Meanwhile, I love Kathryn's rendering of "Hallelujah."
I'm loving it, however, and think it's a very respectable programme for introducing people to Leonard. It touches on a bit of everything, and certainly enough to intrigue someone into going further with him. Tears in my eyes, I'm reminded over and over why I love him so much.
Thanks so much for providing the link, Jim.
I was hoping to see more of Lizzie than just that little snippet in the beginning. Is there more of her?

thanks so much for that link, Jim, that was great.
I just watched it because of course they didn't bring it in Germany and if they did it was on a channel I don't get.
That was great but it wasn't the whole show was it ?!
And some parts were really hard to understand for me.
