What's the world's saddest song?
What's the world's saddest song?
At there is no shortage of human misery and no shortage of very good songwriters, including Leonard Cohen, I am wondering what members of this board think is the saddest. It should also be beautiful as well as sad. I just found one in French called "Il N'y a pas d'Amour Heureux" by George Brassens. I wonder if any one can nominate others that will compare with it. If you have reasons for why a certain song is the saddest, please explain.
Georges Brassens
Il n’y a pas d’amour heureux 1965
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rien n'est jamais acquis à l'homme
Mon bel amour, mon cher amour, ma déchirure

English translation " There is no Happy Love." ( amenable to all corrections)
Man never gets to keep anything, neither his
Strength, nor his weakness nor his heart. And when he believes
He's opened his arms, his shadow is that of a cross,
And when he squeezes his happiness he crushes it
His life is a strange and painful divorce.
There is no happy love.
His life resembles unarmed soldiers
Who were equipped for an other destination
What use is it for them to get up in the morning
Whom they find again in the evening, disarmed and uncertain,
Say these words my life and hold back your tears
There is no happy love.
My beautiful love, my dear love, who tears me apart
I carry you within like a wounded bird
And those who know not watch us pass by
Repeating after me the words which I twisted
And which for your large eyes soon enough died
There is no happy love
The time to learn to live it is already too late
How in the night our hearts weep in unison
What it takes in unhappiness for the least chanson,
What it takes in regrets to pay for a thrill,
What it takes in sobbing for a tune on the guitar.
There is no happy love.
There is no love which may not come to pain.
There is no love where one may not be bruised.
There is no love from which one may not be withered.
And not more than of you the love of country
There is no love that doesn't live on tears
There is no happy love,
But it's our love, for us both.

Hi Lightning ~
If you could post the lyrics to that song, it would be helpful in assessing whether there are any "others that will compare with it." I've never heard or heard of the song. It appears to mean something along the lines of "There is no happy love." Or, does "heureux" mean "heart," so there is no love of the heart would be the meaning? But, then, that's only the title.....with all the lyrics still to go.
Thanks.

Hi Lightning,
Did you see the movie of the same name (or rather the World's Saddest Movie, I think). The movie was about trying to find the 'Saddest song'. Many sad, sad songs from South America. Political ones. Personal ones. The two together.
Good food for thought. There should be many. Edith Piaf was a good sad song singer. The Saddest Song? Hmmmm. Good one. I have to think this over.
Linda.

Hi Sandra ~
Actually, I expected that to be the one that Lightning named, when I saw the thread title. So, I'm even more intrigued to know the content of the one she did name. In fact, if we're going to compare "sad, sadder, saddest," we should have the lyrics to all the songs. Not everyone knows the content of the Jacques Brel song that you listed, either.

The Pub With No Beer by
Dropkick Murphys (a sad sad story)
-----------------------
Chorus:
Well it's lonesome away from your kindred and all
By the camp fire at night,
Where the wild dingos call.
But there's nothin' so lonesome
morbid or drear,
than to stand in the bar of a pub with no beer.
Now the publican's anxious for the quota to come
and there's a far away look on the face of the bum
the maids got all cranky and
and the cooks acting queer
what a terrible place, is a pub with no beer.
Then the stockman rides up with his dry dusty throat
He presses up to the bar and pulls a wad from his coat.
But the smile on his face quickly turns to a snear
As the barman says sadly,
"The pubs got no beer."
Then the swaggy comes in smoothered in dust and flies
He throws down his roll and rubs the sweat from his eyes
But when he is told he says "what's this I hear"
I've trudged fifty flamin' miles
To a pub with no beer
Now there's a dog on the veranda for his master he waits
But the boss is inside drinkin' wine with his mates.
He hurries for cover and he cringes with fear
It's no place for a dog,
Round a pub with no beer.
And old Billie the Blacksmith, the first time in his life
Why he's gone home cold sober to his darling wife
He walks in the kitchen she says your early Bill dear
But then he breaks down and he tells her
The pub's got no beer.
Well its hard to believe that there's customers still
But the money's still tinkling in the old ancient til
The wine dots are happy and I know they're sincere
When they say they don't care if the pubs got no beer
So it's a lonesome away from your kindred and all
By the camp fire at night,
Where the wild dingos call.
But there's nothin' so lonesome
morbid or drear,
than to stand in the bar of that pub with no beer.

Yes. Also, I know I've heard many sad songs over the years. Songs to cry for. I can't, now, think of one that stands out. There must be a Leonard song. There has to be. But Leonard's music can be either/or, depending on what mood the listener is in.
I'd be interested in the lyrics to that one (that one
) the song that Lightning mentioned, as well. Many sad songs in French. My downfall.
Linda.

"I eat when I'm hungry, I drink when I'm dry-
if the whisky don't kill me, I'll live 'till I die"
May I offer you in this place an attempt to translate the first verse of
"Ne me quitte pas":
Don't leave me
we must forget, we can leave it all behind
which has already left us,
forget the time
the misunderstandings
and the time we lost by knowing how
to forget these hours that kill sometimes
...
I would offer you pearls of rain
from lands where
it never rains
I would dig the earth
when I've died
to cover your body
with gold and light
if the whisky don't kill me, I'll live 'till I die"

Linda,
The film you're referring to is The Saddest Music in the World.
It takes place in Winnipeg in the 30's. It stars Isabela Rosellini, a beer baroness who holds a contest for The Saddest Music in the World.
It's surreal, strange and funny.
I recommend it! It's fairly recent - you can rent it.
