info about external hard drives

this part of the site is mainly for anyone interested in writing, music and art, and if you are a person with a lot of precious files that you'd hate to lose, it is important to have peace of mind knowing that they are safe. therefore, being the data freak that i am, wish to take a little 'time out' to assist anyone not sure how to go about securing their data.
secure your data 3 ways: (hard drives sometimes fail)
1. keep your original files.
2. make a backup on an external hard drive.
3. copy the backup onto cloud storage (you will have to pay a small amount).
there are two types of external hard drives on sale, the standard HDD (Hard Disc Drive) and the more sophisticated SSD (Solid-State Drive - similar to a flash drive). shop assistants will explain the differences, but it can become technical and confusing for anyone not data savvy. the SSD is preferred by some because it is faster, has no moving parts (discs) inside and therefore tolerates a few bumps and bangs . . . and uses less energy.
personally, i prefer HDD, not only because it is a lot cheaper, but also because the data is far more retrievable should the device fail - and they sometimes do. SSD has a limited amount of times you can rewrite, and data loss has been known to occur if the device is not used very much.
in norway the most popular brands currently are WD (Western Digital) and Seagate Expansion.
remember that after the necessary formatting, the empty space on a hard drive is reduced. for example a 5TB hard drive will only give you about 4.5 free space, while a 10TB will give you about 9 TB.
that's all from me for this time. take care of your files, safeguard them, because losing them is not a good experience. hope this information has been useful.
