from the financial times - life of a song :

...The scrambled Spanglish of the title has its origins in the 1954 movie The Barefoot Contessa, in which Ava Gardner’s title character marries into an Italian family whose motto, carved in stone, is “Che sarà, sarà”.

When the songwriters saw the movie, Livingston jotted down the phrase in the dark. While writing the song for Hitchcock, lyricist Evans changed the words with an eye to international appeal — more people speak Spanish than Italian.

However it is closer to the Portuguese “O que será, será”. The “what will be will be” sentiment can be traced back centuries, to Dickens’s Hard Times and Marlowe’s Dr Faustus...

...The TV series From (2022-) has gloomy opening titles accompanied by a Pixies version that rips up the tune and cuts out the middle verse.

The rewrite evokes late-period Leonard Cohen, the lead vocal half-spoken against an angelic chorus...

[seb thinks leonard could have married doris day - they'd have made a wonderful couple.]
