U2 SIGN UP AS LEONARD COHEN'S BACKING BAND

U2 have taken a break from their sell-out US tour to provide backing to revered crooner LEONARD COHEN in a tiny Manhattan, New York club.

The group were filmed recording Cohen classic TOWER OF SONG at erotic cabaret lounge The Slipper Room yesterday (19MAY05) for an upcoming documentary about the torch singer.

Ironically, U2 star BONO performed Cohen's HALLELUJAH on tribute album TOWER OF SONG a decade ago (95).

Bono sings a verse of Cohen's hit while U2 provide back-up for the track, which will feature in the untitled LIAN LUNSON (corr) film.

Bono and bandmate THE EDGE join JARVIS COCKER and NICK CAVE among the stars paying tribute to Cohen in the film.

This is from the website of U2:

Tower Record

A secret film shoot with Leonard Cohen in New York.

They hardly ever get a day off but yesterday, in between a clutch of shows in the New York area, U2 got together to do some recording with legendary singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen.

Filming for an upcoming documentary on Cohen, directed by Lian Lunson, the band turned up in a burlesque lower east side venue known as ‘The Slipperoom Club.’

Passers by could barely believe it as the cars arrived in the area and decanted the members of U2. Leonard himself turned up on foot, sharing vocal duties with Bono on a recording of one of his best known tracks Tower of Song. And after filming - there being no show to race off to - there was time to chat to fans who had been waiting patiently outside the club.

Cohen, 70, is a long time friend of the band and was at one of the early Vertigo shows in LA last month. In fact it was more than a decade ago that Bono recorded a spine-tingling version of his ‘Hallelujah’ on a Cohen tribute album, Tower of Song. The new documentary will also feature tributes from Jarvis Cocker and Nick Cave.

Where is The Slipperoom Club? Did Leonard meander down from the Chelsea? I haven't had time to read the article, but wasn't sure from the wording here, whether Leonard himself was in attendance. Clearly [now], he was. Ah, the New Yorkers ~ what a treat for them.

This could be a sign of good things to come for Leonard Cohen. U2 was just inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. Bono got down from the stage and started walking around and shaking hands of celebrities while singing "I Can't Live With or Without You". He then put his arm around Jann Wenner, the founder and editor of Rolling Stone magazine, who is also on the voting committee for the rock hall.

Sounds pretty cool, though I'd rather hear Leonard sing by himself. I guess these performances are all being recorded for Leonard's upcoming dvd. Good to see things happening. By the way, is there any news on Anjani's album?

Bono's Hallelujah was probably the worst thing on that album. Hope some real talent creeps into that documentary and not just what the execs think will sell it.

According to the information we now have this U2/Cohen duet will be a part of a new documentary about Hal Willner's "Came so far for beauty" tribute concerts.

Leonard is way up high in the tower of song. U2 haven't even got past the front gate yet. There must be better "artists" for him to duet with!!

Hi

UbiquiDP, you're right about U2. They've done some nice things ("The Joshua Tree", "The unforgettable fire" etc.) but the newer songs ... I don't like them. :?

Still, Bono is very committed in politics and environment. I like that.

Bono / U2 - Leonard

Post by andy Jones »

We All Have Opinons On Bono/u2 And Question How Good They Really Are
What We Can't Question Is The Love Respect And Admiration They Have For Leonard Especially Bono, I Can Remember Back In 1995 After The Compleition Of Tower Of Song The Tribute CD To Leonard, Leonard Himself Wrote And Sent Silver Letter Openers To All The Singers Who Contributed To The Cd Including Bono, How Gracious !!!!!!!!!
