Summer Music

Post by linda_lakeside »

Hi All,

I'd be interested to know what everyone is listening to these days. If this is a duplicate thread, I won't be surprised. I'll call on Tchoco, and together we'll put up another picture of Mr. Spock.

More so, I'd be interested to know what people remember as 'Summer Songs', those songs that still evoke images of summer when we hear them. They don't have to refer to summer, necessarily, just feel like summer. A tune from the best summer of your life...that kind of thing.

Thankin' ya!

These past few weeks and coming up :

Martha wainwright
Eddi reader
Leonard Cohen
Shirley Horn
Eliza Gilykson
Kirsty MacColl
Laurie Anderson
Nina Simone
Janis Ian
Claire Teal
Rufus Wainwright

Loads more, but they're all on heavy rotation at the moment. :)

Hmmm...ain't it funny how, sometimes, one can almost guess who a person is by the music they listen to. Interesting.... :)

The thrilling/beautiful summer-breaze-like Summertime . Of course. All the other songs that came in my mind right now are not in English so I guess it would be as irrelevant on that thread as this recurent picture of Mr. Spock paying his respect to the company. Respectfully yours, Tchoco.

Mr. Spock. Yes, I guess we can only turn to him for solace in the most dire of situations, now. Thank you for your contribution, Tchoco. Another great link.

T -!!

I haven't seen you in a little while. Hope you're doing well. Laurie Anderson? Fine choice. I haven't heard much from her in recent years. This is what I keep trying to do. Find out what's good now. I hate spending money on something that has only one good song on it. I've found that the people in this site know a good deal more about music that I might enjoy.

There are some great, old songs that personify summer for me. 'Summer in the City' by Lovin' Spoonful. 'Hot Fun in the Summer Time...' (by, 'sorry, can't remember').

Take care, T,
Linda.

I have another favourite Summertime, Tchoco. It's great to hear it in Diana's voice. But as Sharon's gonna record it for her debut album - I can't wait!

Summertime
Written by Leonard Cohen and Sharon Robinson
Recorded by Diana Ross, Red hot rhythm and blues, USA 1987, and Roberta Flack, Set the night to music, USA 1991

Summertime when will you come?
I wanna put my light things on
I wanna put my winter life away
Summertime I need a sunny day

I want those peaches on the table
Want the watermelon red
And the warm sun crepping through the window
To ease the outer pain

I want the sand out there to lie on
And the sea out there to swim
So my heart can take a holiday
From breaking over here

Summertime when will you come?
I wanna put my light things on
Wanna put my winter life away
Summertime I need a sunny day

And I wanna it dry forever
Wanna roll those windows down
Get the breeze back on my body
Get my feet back on the ground

I want the sand out there to lie on
And the sea out there to swim
So my heart can take a holiday
From breaking over here

Summertime when will you come?
I wanna put my light things on
I wanna put my winter life away
Summertime I need a sunny day

hi linda,

haven't been around too much 'cause i don't see a lot to respond to really. besides, i hardly have internet time anymore on account of me working a lot more in the past month or so than i ever used to. i say the best music for the summer is... OLDIES!!! hahahaha. can't go wrong there. some grass roots, some buddy holly, some motown, some elvis, some mersey beat.... you know.

Hi T -

I think you're right! When those oldies come on the radio, it's hard not to play the music louder and drive a little faster. I'm trying to get a handle on summer, as it looks like we're not going to get much of one this year!

I knew about this song Tom :) but, I was answering Linda's question "...I'd be interested to know what people remember as 'Summer Songs', those songs that still evoke images of summer when we hear them..." and this song is not on the list, Tom dearest :wink

Thanks to have bring it here, anyway, and for the good though. :)

I can take care & make MP3 of Summertime & send it to both of you, but I'll need some time, so don't expect it tomorrow.

The ultimate summer music will always be something from West Coast, wit surfing feeling. That's why the ultimate summer soundtrack for new generation is a band called The Thrills. Last year I even purchased sky-blue T-shirts with varios "old school" stuff on them (palms, beaches, "California", "Surf" and similar pictures) - I reffere to those T-shirts as my "The Thrills-T-shirts" :D

The ultimate Thrills' song is on ein which the lyrics are more or less only listing the names of the beaches in California where they wanna be... And they are from Dublin!

Ah, yes...time. There's never enough is there? But, I will nontheless keep my eyes open, on the lookout, for this particular peach.

If Diana Ross recorded it, I can see Sharon's voice working very well in this one. Sharon has a nice warm quality in her vocals.
