Cohen Lyrics

My son is about to be married. He was born when I was 23, and I raised him alone. We have always had a very close relationship, and some of that is centered around our mutual passion for music -- mine for Leonard Cohen. I am racking my brain to find a song of Cohen's that would be appropriate for us to dance to at his wedding. Since Cohen doesn't do sappy, and I hate sentimentality, I think I have my work cut out for me. Any suggestions?

I'm Your Man (too obvious?)
Night Comes On has a father/son part, but the father dies...

Welcome to the Forum, Soshea

. You are a woman, right? A parent-child, Cohen song for a dance is a little trickier for this occasion.
What a shame you weren't aware of us a couple years ago. You could've attended the New York Cohen Event.

This is almost a frequently asked question. For someone who never married and obviously does not believe in marriage, Leonard sure does get to sing at a lot of weddings. Have you seen the thread about "Dance me to End of Love" where marriage is both the consummation and the finish of love?

Take This Waltz

Hi Soshea,
and welcome to the forum!
To me, Take This Waltz is a favourite for dancing to. It's a real Vienna waltz and has a very fine tempo. Of course, the lyrics might amount to bit of a problem... it is such an intense expression of the tension between eros and thanatos.
Moreover, it's become very important to me in a way. One night I had a dream where this song occurred in a context of love, evoking a beautiful, somehow blessed atmosphere. Although it's been years since I had this dream, I still wonder what it was trying to tell me whenever I listen to Take This Waltz. Well maybe, one day I'll know...
Greetings from Munich!

How about "heart with no companion", thats one of the most upbeat songs I can think of, its on Leonard Cohen live I think. Its kind of short so loop it around twice. That seems like it would work at a wedding. Finally found my place in the world, perfect partner sort of thing. BTW anyone know where pacific standard time (west coast of the U.S.) is in relation to GMT?

The Smokey Life is very danceable-to.

On Mary Walsh's new show Hatching Matching and Dispatching the band was playing the Future at a wedding reception, very funny.
True Love Leaves No Traces would be a good one.
Dance Me To The End of Love, if you can see this song as a statement of how marriage has its difficulties but love will see you through.

At a slight tangent, my wife and I printed one of my favourite Cohen quotations on our order of service (I don't know if the vocabulary is different in Amerikee), namely:
So come, my friends, be not afraid.
We are so lightly here.
It is in love that we are made;
In love we disappear.

CLOSING TIME!
cmon mum, get that blouse torn off girl!
Definitely not sappy or sentimental!
Dance Me To The End of Love has always been my favorite, but lately I have been really enjoying The Mist (on Anjani’s Blue Alert CD). Perhaps too slow even for a slow waltz though and maybe not appropriate for a mother/son combination, but I think it would be lovely for a bride and groom.
