Leonard fans - what else do we share in common?

Post by Eve_ »

Hi! I'm brand new here. From having a quick look through posts here I've been extremely impressed by the intellect of members and their ability to express themselves in writing (in fact I am almost afraid to post here at all as I find it a bit intimidating!).

I've loved Leonard since I first discovered him 12 years or so ago. For me Leonard's music has a magical power, touching me at a deeper level than any other music that I've come across. I know from reading posts on this forum that many others feel this too (though I haven't met too many other Leonard fans in everyday life). I've often wondered whether Leonard fans share other things in common - are we a certain kind of person? Are we all depressed?!(personally I don't find Leonard's music depressing) Do we have a certain kind of attitude to life? Similar education level? Do we share similar taste in other things? Other music? Art? Movies?...

I'm sure some of this has been covered before in other posts but am really curious to know these things about you! Music, art and movies should be easy to answer!

For me -

Other music?
I love Stephen Merritt and the Magnetic Fields (very clever lyrics); Paul Kelly (Australian, not sure if he's known overseas) - a bit folky, a great story-teller.

Movies?
A French film called The Girl on the Bridge is my favourite. Black and white, made in the 1990s. It evokes in me a similar feeling to Lenoard's music (if a movie can do that..?). Quirky, offbeat, subtely erotic, romantic. Anyone else seen it?

Art?
I love Man Ray - again an offbeat eroticism that gives me a feeling I associate with Leonard's music.

Would love to hear about others' tastes beside Leonard. Maybe you can lead me to some wonderful music/movie/art that I haven't yet discovered...

Hi Eve,

I'm a noob too. Musically I like anything that's done well. There's so much crap out there masquerading as good music. The only genre that I'd draw a line through is rap. I've yet to find anything worthwhile there and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. I love classical and traditional choral music, piano, alto flute, rafter-shaking heavy metal, and I'm a sucker for lyrics.

I know virtually nothing about art. I can't draw a straight line with a ruler. However, a woman I grew up with does well with her work and I find it quite good. Her name is Susan Hartenhoff. You can Google her name and click Images above and see some of her stuff. I have a pencil sketch that she did of one of my horses back in high school. Might be worth something someday. When I see her work I see a combination of color, math and music. I've seen some of her originals and they're pretty powerful in person. I also like M.C.Escher

Movies - I like a wide variety of movies. I love horror flicks. All of them, gratuitous blood and all. Some oddball favorite movies would include:
Meet Joe Black - very underappreciated IMHO. The score is beautiful and even though the pace of the movie is slow, it's worth it. It's the only movie that ALWAYS makes me cry at the end.
Idendity - John Cusack and others are trapped in an out of the way motel. Murder ensues.
Narc - Ray Liotta looking old and puffy. Great plot and a terrific performance from Liotta.
Out of Africa - 'nuff said
The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit - cute Disney flick with a very young Kurt Russel about an underdog horse that goes to the big show. Pretty light stuff but the horse footage is great.

Another passion of mine is jigsaw puzzles. I have no decorating talent so I glue puzzles together and hang them on the walls. So, that's about it for me.

Music - I'm a folky girl, but my ears have been getting used to some rock and roll again. I don't know if everyone uses the term rock-n-roll the way I do. My rock-n-roll includes Leonard, Joni Mitchell & Tom Waits, among about 2 million others.
I play 5-string claw-hammer banjo. For that kind of music there's Bruce Molsky, Rafe Stefanini, Brad Leftwich, all of whom are fiddlers. Let's see, John Hermann is a good banjo player. Tommy Thompson. I like Round Peak style, but I don't have the restraint to play that way. I can't leave this topic without mentioning the Crooked Jades.

Movies - I consider myself to be a movie-buff, though I am as guilty as the rest of the population of skimming past indie films. One strange movie that stayed with me was called CUBE. Anyone seen it? Hmm, I like Kubrick a lot, but his stuff is hard to watch. I liked Shayamalan until he turned out to be a one trick pony (but I still like The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable). ET is probably my favourite movie, except that I generally don't have favourites. I recently saw a Spanish flick called The Sea Within, and I thought that was very interesting. Recently saw El Topo, but I need to watch it about 40 more times before I make a decision about it.
Can you squint like Clint?

Art - Goya, Van Gogh, my husband. I have a mental image of Van Gogh standing at an easel with a paint tube in his hand, stabbing it sort of gently against the canvas, wiping the tears from his face with his other sleeve. Photography - I don't think I'll ever tire of Edward Weston.

Hi Melody ~

It's great to see you back :) .

On this little item:
Another passion of mine is jigsaw puzzles. I have no decorating talent so I glue puzzles together and hang them on the walls. So, that's about it for me.
I also have a feeling that you're more concerned about what's going on with your horses and spending time with them than you are about what's inside hanging on the walls. Some puzzles are very cool when they're finished and geez... after all that putting them together, why just break them all up into little pieces again :? ? Of the ones you have hanging, what is your favourite one of and where do you have it hanging?

Music: Heavy metal, Extreme 'progressive' metal, and stuff like Cohen, Orbison, Sting.. I'm a sucker for good vocal performances.

Movies: No real preference, just good movies.

Art: painting: surrealism, social realism, naturalism, dadaism, modernism to some extent..
Now you've got the gist of what my lettuce meant.

I for one would enjoy reading them. Elephants carry a lot of meaning for me. I depend on Ganesha. And I have written a lot of elephantine poetry. I would love to read your words...

I don't see anyone replying "literature", followed by favourite writers.

Mine are:

- Graham Greene
- V.S. Naipaul
- Gabriel Garcia Marques
- Paul Theroux
- Brett Easton Ellis

and some in other language zones.

Hi!
I love music, a lot of kinds of that. I'm a fan of Bunbury (a spanish singer), and he let me know Cohen. Now I like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, but I'm learning and discovering a lot of singers, like Johnny Cash. I love too the BSO of the movie: Amelie; REM; The Beatles; U2; The Doors; and some spanish singers.
My favorites movies are: The goodfather, The sea within, The silence of the lambs and Good Will Hunting.
In literature, I like Oscar Wilde; in painting I like Vermier and the impressionism.

Love,
Maria

Hi Eve,

you should check out the 'Getting to know you quiz' on the Everything Else section posted by Fljotsdale. It's a sure fire way to step into the mind of fellow Cohenites. I haven't completed it myself yet but I will get around to it soon(hopefully). And welcome, by the way. :)

favorite music:
nick drake, davy graham, bert jansch, django reinhardt, vashti bunyan, shirley collins, nico, pink floyd and radiohead. i also like alot of older blues and jazz from the 20s and 30s. some of my favorites are skip james, big bill broonzy, elizabeth cotten (from the 50s i guess), and gene austin as well as a few other crooners. i do listen to alot of ragtime music too. i'll stop b/c like most of you folks...my list could go on and on. heh.

movies...brazil, sweet and lowdown and the planet earth bbc series all day long. i don't know...i like hitchcock and orsen welles alot too.

i'm into watercolors. i paint but i'm new to it. i use watercolors because its easy to clean. just add water and wipe it down.

i play the guitar and banjo. i can play the drums and piano too but not so much anymore. had piano lessons and that helped with other instruments. i'm not a fully self taught guitar player. after about 7 or 8 years of playing i signed up for lessons for a few months. didn't like them much so i quit. i did learn some things though. my teacher was a fun guy to talk to.

no particular genre for favorite authors. some of more favorite ones are rainer maria rilke, haruki murakami, garbiel garcia marquez, hermann hesse, knut hamsun, ralph waldo emerson, dostoevski, and friedrich nietzsche. but i'll read pretty much anything that'll hold my interest.

i don't know...i like some video games too. i don't play them much...but sometimes i get in the mood for them. i like puzzle ones.

Hello Socializard. What kind of banjo do you play?

Mark - I recently watched Picnic at Hanging Rock. Yeah.
