As to Jacques Brel himself, I don't know the original French version. I'll assume that our "Jackie" is more literal as Mort Shuman was striving for a musical translation.

I didn't know the orginal myself as I am not very good with French. I only really came to appreciate the moment two days ago and so made the corrections that I felt were needed to describe the wish it generated. Here is the wish. The moment was given to Winnie.
